DA 2 Piston caliper conversion

I’ve been wanting to do this for a while now, I haven’t really seen much people do guides on g2’s so I’m gonna make my best attempt at doing so :cross:

Here’s what I’ve got for the conversion, OEM 94 legend calipers, and oe brembo Mini Cooper non s rotors. (I’ll be picking up pads and fluid later)

With those rotors it’s basically just a bolt on affair, so very easy. Did you buy the calipers new? You may want to paint them before applying. I bought some reman calipers once back in the day, they looked great, all nice and shiny… so I installed them as-is. Then the rusted immediately :frowning: So, when I did my ITR caliper swap with reman calipers I was sure to paint them prior to install.

Good luck and don’t forget to pair them with a good set of braided steel brake lines

Will do colin! I thought about painting them, but that voids the warranty, i picked them up at autozone, theyre nissin remans. i was thinking i could throw some clear over them, idk how well it would hold up though. Currently im on a budget, so im gonna run the factory lines until i get paid.

I skipped the whole caliper removal process because im pretty sure everyone knows how to do it. :stuck_out_tongue:

The new Cooper rotor lines straight up and mounts with no issues other than some clearance with the brake shield. (easily fixed with some persuasion  )

Here’s the clearance with my brake shield, mine is bent and folded completely out of factory shape lol

The caliper bracket lines up and bolts up perfectly with no struggle, just had to finesse the brake shield a bit near the corner of the mounting bracket.

A couple of 17mm’s and the caliper is on with no issues!

Other side done!

They fit just fine with the 15" Gsr blades, a close fit, but no rubbing or any issues.

Eww, we might need some new brake fluid[/B]

New brake fluid on all four corners, and for the time being (im broke) im gonna be running the autozone basic pads i got for 20$, eventually i might upgrade to some Hawk Performance ceramics or some wagners.

The job was pretty simple, no bs, just bolt on and call it a day, i had a really hard time trying to find information on this for g2 tegs, hopefully this helps one of you, now the question is. how much did it cost?

I work at autozone so i get a pretty nice discount on parts

Calipers were 32$ a piece, bracketed.

Rotors were 7$ a piece on rock auto, about 23 total after s/h. (wholeseller closeout) heres a link: http://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=2022176&cc=1426553&jsn=355

Pads were 20, but i took in my old pads and did a warranty return and had the money placed on the price of the new pads, so i actually ended up paying 5$

Fluid was 10.99

So ~110 $ total for a 2 Piston conversion, id say thats not too bad!

It’s a great mod for the money. I’ve got the Legend 2-Pots, Mini Cooper Rotors and Axxis Ultimate Pads. Braking is excellent.

Holy shit, you got Brembo’s for $7 each!! You scored big time on that, I wish that was still available, I would have just bought as many as I could as that’s a crazy cheap price for any rotor, let alone a Brembo. Nice score!

BTW, instead of linking your pictures try posting them as visible photos. It makes things like your write up much, much easier to read. When posting click the “Image” button (looks like mountains with a sun in the background). Paste in the link and there ya go. You can also use the standard “IMG” BBcode.

Theyre still available colin, 6 of em left! jump on them while you can! Ps: i dont know how to use the forum yet lol

I went for a drive on the basic pads and man did they suck! every brake had the scent of brake pads behind it lol i’ve got some of the autozone gt brand pads on the side at work, ill be testing those out. theyre supposed to be comparable to hawk performance ceramics, and they have a lifetime warranty. Ill be the guinea pig lol

Hmm, that’s interesting, I’d always seen it listed as an 07 Mini rotor. When I looked for them there they did not pop up as being available. Now I’m wondering what the differences may be - or maybe they’re the same and it’s irrelevant that people always say the 07 Mini. If they use the same part it seem strange they’d come up for an 04 but not for an 07. I’m looking on Tirerack now and even there it’s listing the Brembo rotors as fitting the 04 but not 07. I’m perplexed.

Do you have a pic showing how the pad and rotor meet up? I’m just wondering if these truly are the right size or not. I know the 07 rotors are a tiny smaller than they’re supposed to be but it still works.

i’ll take a picture tomorrow. what differences could there be? anything to be too concerned about? the brakes feel fine, theres just more pedal travel to brake, but thats to be expected with a stock mc/ and lines.

Heres a table i found at work on the rotor specs

Heres the 07

Bore Diameter (mm) 64.09
Discard Thickness (mm) 20.4
Drilled No
Initial Thickness (mm) 22.0
Material Iron Alloy
Orientation Non-Directional
Outside Diameter (mm) 276.0
Overall Depth (mm) 44.0
Package Quantity 1
Primary Bolt Pattern 4x100
Rotor Type 1-Piece
Secondary Bolt Pattern Not Featured
Slotted No
Vented Yes

Heres the 04

Bore Diameter (mm) 64.15
Discard Thickness (mm) 20.399999
Drilled No
Initial Thickness (mm) 22
Orientation Non-Directional
Outside Diameter (mm) 275.8
Overall Depth (mm) 44.2
Package Quantity 1
Primary Bolt Pattern 4x100
Rotor Material SAE G3000 Grey Iron
Rotor Type 1-Piece
Slotted No
Vented Yes

Doesnt seem like a crazy difference

That’s great info, thank you. Seems odd they would change the specs that tiny, tiny amount. But I suppose any change would denote a different part number even if they are interchangeable.

This is dope thank you. I was looking for a write up on this a while back and this is perfect and its an easy upgrade and no to expensive I will be doing the same here pretty soon.

I have the legend gs calipers now going on 2 years and no real issues other than you can’ fit any 15" under a +45 offset.
also the inner barrel counter weights to balance the wheels rubs in the calipers so they need to move rhe weights to rhe center of the barrel.
I normally do a walk around inspection on the brakes and even pulled them off 3 months later to replace a bad hub bearing. Gave me a chance to inspect the brake pads after break in. They actually match up really well, almost as if the legend pads were made for the mini rotor. Pads are making 100% contact on the rotor.

i know this is a major bump, I’m not sure if anyone else has covered it , however last summer I had 2 seized front calipers on my 91 GS. I replaced them with Willwood DPHA 4 piston calipers. they clear factory EM1 si wheels. I purchased them from JHPUSA. I just purchased aftermarket rotors elsewhere. They have a few separate pads compatible for the caliper, only made by wildwood however, so the choice of pads is limited. I ended up installing XXR 501 wheels I used to have on my civic, which are 15x7 +38 offset and they clear the caliper
