I was told this a few years back, So i dont know if its tru. But if you take your vin# to to the dealership they can get you your stock key locks for doors, and ignition. Anyone know if its tru?
The reason im asking is my ignition is getting old, I have to only put the key in about 3/4 the way and i have to move the steering wheel back in fourth to get it to unlock. But i really dont want to have a different key for the doors and the ignition. My keys are pretty new, ill double check that thou.
The best way to know is to call the Dealership. I do know that for new car with the chip in the key, if you lose the key they can match the the key with you’re vin#
They can only match the cutting of the key with the vin.
The transponder chip inside the key has to be programmed to match the transponder codes stored in the ECU. That is how it is with my key with chip inside.

you are probably not talking about the DA’s but i don’t think they are transponder keys.
I know all you need is to take your title (to prove the car is yours) to the dealer and they can cut you a new key. Had to do this for mine last year.

Yeah DA’s don’t have transponder keys. On the Honda side that started in '03 and I would imagine it is similar for Acura. I know this because I work at a Honda dealer. Can an Acura dealership cut a key for a DA solely by the VIN? I know on newer ones (98-up) they can, just not sure they can on our cars.
On the DA all you need is the original key #. my red GS had all three original keys(including valet) and original owners manual with the key code card in it, the key code card had the same number that was on the side of the original keys. The card had wrote on it take to any dealership for key replacements yadda yadda yadda.
However if I was guessing for the OP’s issue, it isn’t the key causing the ignition issues, your car is almost 20 years old the iginition is getting wore out. My dodge colt was the same way, had several keys made but still had to hold my head just right for it to work replaced the whole ignition worked perfect every time.
Yeah I knew they had key codes and I know they can pull them up on some years by the VIN in the computer. I just wasn’t sure if they could do it for a DA. That’s a nifty little piece of info to remember.
Yes they can cut keys from the vin #. You have to provide ownership documents like the title or an insurance card (must have vin # and your name and address). I had this done for my CRX at Braman Honda.
I dont know if he knew someone or not, but a buddy of mine got new keys for his DA made at a Honda dealer so his could read “Honda”. Im sure he had to provide documentation or something as well…
