Anytime you power up a load, [relays/actuators] you should install a fuse as close to the power “supply”, [point where you connect to 12V+] as you can.
If your relay pack has a fuse you don’t need to add another one unless you are installing the relays , [and their fuse] a long way from the “supply” or unless there is a metal wall, [fire wall] between the fuse and the power “supply” :hmm: 94
I am also trying to convert from manual to power door locks. Someone said I would be better off going aftermarket because of the price and the hassle of the wiring going the oem way. I already have the switches that’s mounted to the door. If I go the aftermarket way, will I be able to use the oem switches on the doors?
That’s an interesting idea to use OEM switches with aftermarket actuators. I haven’t tried it myself, but, yes, i’d say its doable.
I’d suspect you would need to get the OEM switches connected to the aftermarket relay and somhow provide a + or - trigger when you want to lock or unlock the door. I’m not sure if the OEM switches are powered already. If they are, you’re in luck. If not, you’re gonna have to find some sort of relay.
As for OEM vs aftermarket. I find the aftermarket works fine, easy to find and cheap. The catch is that aftermarket actuators also work by you pushing the lock in or out as well. In order to disable this feedback action you’d have to drop one of the wires leading back from the actuators…not sure how that would work out. In my case, I never touch the door lock levers because everything is controlled by the alarm remote.
hey guys im just wondering how would you wire up power door locks for the rear doors. there doesnt seem to be hole for a wire to come from the door to the body. Would i have to drill my own ?? :S
thanks !
I don’t have a sedan, so I can’t say. But I don’t think you should have to. The doors should have a wiring harness which is wired to the body of the car. Page 20-16 shows that the rear doors have a harness which connects somewhere in the door jam. I’d have to look at a sedan to be sure. Sometimes you have to drill through the harness, but otherwise it should be doable without drilling through the door frame.
hey thanks for the heads up. I looked at 20-16 and there appears to be a wire harness inside the rear doors. I’ll take a look around the door when i have the chance to see if theres any places for the wires to go through. Maybe ill take a pic and post it on.
thanks !
From email:
“I saw your pictures I was curious if that was the OEM door locks you showed or if it was after market? If I wanted to intall power door locks on a non power door lock car all I would need is the actuator, rod, and wire? Any information you can give me to help me would be great.”
I figured I’d reply to the forum:
The actual door locks I was using are OEM non-power. The actuators (gun like thingys) are the standard after market stuff you can get anywhere. Buy a power door lock aftermarket kit, and it should come with the actuators, rods and wiring. With that, and some standard tools (drills or gluegun or something to mount them), you’re good to go!
