Disable tweeters?

FCM mentinoned disabling tweeters on a 6.5" speaker and I was wondering if anyone knew any free way to do this…As in, can I just cut the wires leading to the tweeter and re-solder them without the tweeters attached?

The speakers are 6.5" boston acoustic 2 way speakers. (So tweeter sits right on top of the cone)

Thanks!

yeah, cut the leads going to the tweet.

just make sure nothing can short out on the ‘live’ side, and it’s all good.

I don’t know if you know but you’re only disabling the rear tweeters and not all four unless you don’t like having highs in your ride lol

But yeah… just cut the wire going to the tweets and tape it up so it doesn’t short… NOW you’re ready to bump to Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers!

What I do is remove the cap that is used as a x-over for the tweeter, all you need to do is “unsolder” one end of the cap and fold it out of the way. 94

So I picked up a set of JL Audio TR650-CXi and I wanted to check back here before I de-soldered or cut any wires.

I’ve attached a pic below, is the green high-lighted area where I am supposed to de-solder?

Would it be ok to just cut the wire where the red line crosses it? (Id rather avoid this if possible so I can restore the tweeters again later if I wanted to)

Also, what is that little transistor doo-hicky? Is that the crossover?

Thanks!

The “doo-hicky” is a capacitor, it is the passive x-over for the tweeter, you can un-solder either end of the cap, the part you have circled in green or the other end, it makes no diff. 94

Ohhhhhh THATS what you meant by “Cap”…short for capacitor.

I need a glossery of electronic terminology to understand the simplest things you say sometimes. lol

Thanks as always FCM, I have them unsoldered and Im about to put them in the car. Will let you know how htis “mono rear fill” turns out

I’m building some angled spacers for my Alpine Pro Audio Components in the front doors as well. With those and these new JL’s in the rear, hopefully I will get some badly needed Mid-bass back into the actual cabin instead of just at my feet.
