Distributor conversion question

Hey guys,

So I bought a new distributor for my ls/vtec, but I guess I ordered an OBD2 distributor. My ecu is an OBD1. Is it safe to repin the distributor with the ODB1 plugs, or is there any difference in the actual internals between an OBD1 and OBD2 distributor? I’m on a time crunch, and returning it would be nice and reordering the right one, but if I can just repin the plugs, then I will.

Thanks!

As far as I know you can re-pin it without any issues.

You could re-pin it, but it would be pointless. Your ECU must match your distributor in obd. Obd-0 ECU = obd-0 distributor, obd-1 ECU = obd-1 distributor. Otherwise, the vehicle will not run.

Well I can tell you that the distributor runs the vehicle. We have to get it fully timed but it runs. OBD2 and OBD1 are interchangeable from what I’ve read on forums. It repinned pretty easy  Sorry it took so long to get back, it’s been a hell of a three weeks trying to get her all together.

as far as i am aware, and from my own experience, OBD-0 & OBD-I, are completely different inside. there are a different number of “teeth” on the shaft for (IIRC), the crank position sensor. i had a OBD-I dist. trying to run my ls/v, with an OBD-0 ecu. car would run, but it wouldnt rev past 3500 rpm. ecu thought the engine was spinning faster than it really was.

not entirely sure on the OBD-I to OBD-2 switch…is yours running correctly? revving all the way and such?

That’s a good question. I’m unsure if it will spin up past 3500, I haven’t gotten on the motor really. We’ve revved it a few times to seat the rings but I have to be modest because the motor mounts tore during my swap. AS far as I could tell nothing was of issue. I’ll keep posted. I won’t be able to buy mounts until next week. I hope all is well. Everywhere else I read was saying they are interchangeable.
