distributor

i just recently did a valve adjustment. i was driving my car a good 45 minutes away and when i got to the last toll booth my check engine light came on and the idle was going nucking futs. so i parked it at my friends house right down the street and then worked on figuring it out. when i started it up it seemed fine then i heard a whining sound. it was coming from the distributor.

i took the cap off and noticed the rod holding the rotor on is loose i could wiggle it. so i took the coil pack off to see wat was up and noticed there was a gyro sorta thing that holds the rod in place while letting it spin. well from what i could see there were two screws that should be holding it tight… well only one was there and it was almost about to fall out, so i tightened it and my car ran fine for a day. now its doing it again every now and then, i need a permenant way of fixing it but don’t want to buy a new distributor…

is it possible my timing is off and caused this to happen?

See what CEL you are throwing instead of guessing what is wrong.

CEL? i’m guessing code. well i don’t know how to do that, never had to before and like i said the light doesn’t always come on and when it does i shut the car off imediatly cuz the engine rattles bad

still need help on this guys

Try searching…

What year is your car? If it’s 90-91, turn the key to “on” and lift the carpet on the pass. side to expose the ECU and count how many times the red LED light flashes…the codes are listed on here. If it’s a 92-93 you will have to use a paperclip to jump the harness and then look…better instructions are posted on here, just search. Even though you aren’t getting a CEL you should check for codes anyway, never hurts.

ok so it has four slow blinks witch is not listed

Remember there are long and short blinks…

i guess they were short, they just blinked, only 4 times then started over, so i looked at the list of codes on here and i don’t see 4 or 40???

I don’t know, it has to be something. You should try looking elsewhere on the internet, maybe some were left out on that list.

code four is crank position sensor

So basically something is messed up with the distributor since Im pretty sure that that sensor is located in the distributor. Have you even tried putting in a second screw in that spot? I would probably try to do that first since obviously if something is physically wrond with it its probably going to mess something up.

You could look in the For Sale forums on here for a used distributor, if you don’t want to spend the money on a new one yet, and that would at least fix your problem for a while…

I actually have one off my 91 gs I could sell you.

i haven’t been able to get another screw cuz i have to take the other one out to match it and i don’t want to screw something up more…

how much do you want to sell it to me for?

is there something in this forumn that explains step by step on replacing it?

50$ shipped if shipping isnt bad. Being pulled off of my perfectly running engine so its ready to go.

i need a week to figure out my finances

how bout looking for the screw that fell out inside the distributor…that will mess with those magnetic sensors good

i’m not sure how to take it apart to look for that i found some screws i think would take it apart but there star patterned with like a little circle in the middle so the star patterned tools i have won’t go in.

hey i really do need that distributor so i will take it 50 shipped my email is falcon87407@aol.com

so how do you replace a distributor? never done this before, so hopefully i get an answer by the time i get this distributor.
