so i’ve had these goodridge brake lines forever and never got around to installing them. bought them, accepted the fact that yearly i had to clean them and wipe them down. then i foundout about Techna-fit SS brakelines and was kind of pissed because they were coated with silicone hose instead of having bare SS exposed to the elements, namely dust. which we all know that after time and much rubbing causes your SS lines to weaken and burst. so i got an idea to coat my lines and hopefully never have to wipe them down yearly, yes call me lazy. comments and flamming is welcome, but i thought it was a pretty decent idea
went to the computer hardware store and picked up some .75" heatshrink tubing. i believe it came in pieces of 4’.
cut off all the brackets (my omnis dont have brackets on them anyways, zipties are your friend) and pulled the heatshrink over the lines.
didnt have a heatgun handy so i used the stove, make sure its a gas stove. afterwards i ran the newly coated line under some cold tap water. the heatshrink melts pretty fast so i doubt there was any harm done to the line itself but the water was a precaution.
top one is before being heated and the bottom is after being heated
when i first started reading the thread i was thinking maybe you diped them in some of that rubberizing stuff. the stuff you can re-coat tool handles with and stuff.
omg, i just noticed how messy that counter was in the pic :giggle:
now, i’m pretty sure the heatshrink was .75" but just bring a line to the store and ask them if they have a bulk roll of it and see if it goes over the fitting. it is gonna be a really tight fit but with a little effort it does slide over.
well the goodridge and earl’s lines dont come with a coating like techna-fit. i think the techna-fit lines are a few dollars more than the other 2 but i already had the goodridge so decided to do this.
i was thinking of pink but they didnt have them :hmm:
the problem with the colored heatshrink is its usually opaque, atleast at the store i went to. clear is cool because you can see if fluid is starting to leak and you still keep the SS look.
