Do It Yourself Engine Rebuild Help

I am starting to plan a project for next summer. I want to buy an engine(could be damaged/blown if im going to rebuild it no?) for a rebuild project to put in my car complete at the end of next summer.

1st - what should i get b16, b17, b18c, b20, h22 ??? needs to be VTEC i figure

2nd - i need to find some good resources, books, websites, anything to do my research on this winter so i have a good start come spring

3rd - anyone in the northeast (NJ / NYC) area that wants to rent out a garage(or warehouse) space with me for a couple of months to do this next year, id love it and it would keep the cost down for us - let me know

4th - what special tools might i need and the cost - could these be “borrowed” from Autozone or rented from anywhere

Thanks in advance for any help!!!

PS. oh btw, i have a '91 gs - so if anyone has done this give me some tips and some things(problems) you ran across when doing it

the first thing you should do is go to the teg tips and download the Engine swap guide that G2Guru wrote. Read it over and over and over and over till that sucka is memorized. that swap guide has all the basics that you’ll need. but you’ll still have to do some other research. next i’d look around in this forum (engine hybrids). Just scroll through page after page after page (i know, it kinda sucks doing this kind of thing… but it does help) and read whatever strikes you as interesting. And visit this board a lot to keep up with questions other people ask (most of the time if you have a question, its been asked before by somene else and usually answered).

Also, if you want any sort of useful help from us you’re going to have to post how much you want to spend. Because if you leave it open ended like you did you’re gonna get people telling you to build up a crazy modded b18c5 or a crvtec or some turbo motor that is gonna cost you $10,000, when in reality you only have $2000 to spend on the swap. There is pretty much no limit to how much you can spend on an engine swap, so you’ve got to give us an estimate to work with. Also, do you want to swap in a built up motor? like to its finalized form? or are you looking to do a basically stock engine swap and then work on modding it for later?

I’ll probably spend around $3500 or so - that would be the MAX to my budget. But I figure I will do all the work myself - labor = $0…if ya know what i mean.

I really just want to learn how to do this, kinda like, um fun i guess

So im going to find the cheaoest crapped out motor in a junkard and rebuild it myself, and then drop it in only after it is done.

I have been reading the boards non-stop too - although i have to read more in this neighborhood.

Thanks for the help!
