double clutching

i raced a dude the other day and he got me only cuz i dumped at about 3.5-4 and i spun out bad. (first race with it and i was still new to me) he told me after the race that i needed to double clutch to help with the spin out, but how do you double clutch at the start? am i crazy or is he? i now relize that 1.5-2 is a much better number to start at.

double clutch is really intended for longer races in a Q mile you shouldent need to double clutch at all.

If you double clutch and accidentally rev it too high you might blow the welds on your intake manifold.

Kids and their movies these days.

Double clutching is useless when racing. It was a technique used before cars had synchronized transmissions to help get the vehicle into the next gear as smoothly as possible. to do this you press in the clutch, slide the shifter into the neutral position, match engine revs with road speed, and slide the shifter into the next gear. Synchronizers make this unnecessary. when you’re racing you want to get your next gear as quickly as possible. the less time you spend shifting, the more time you spend building forward momentum. find a track, practice your launch so you know what works best for you and your car.

but ive heard one technique where u press the clutch rapidly while ur accelerating in a gear. the rpm will just jump and drop and he said its faster .he told be its double clutching and i didnt believe him. we kept arguing that its not called “double clutching” , just clutching imo. its like it cant mean two diff things. i guess this where we get confused. they didn’t know what double clutching trully means. and i agree about teglover’s explanation.
maybe thats what twst is talkign about.

i think you may be talkin about feathering a clutch
best way to get traction when launching

speed shifting is all i use in a race. but there is a good double clutch method but like i said its for like a freeway race when you have your car almost maxing out you can double clutch and get a little more jump to it. but really isnt worth doing.

Double clutching may be useless for racing but it’s not a bad habit to get in to for daily driving.
My second car was a pos sentra I bought for 100 bucks with trashed synchros, I mean baaad you sometimes couldnt even physically muscle it into gear. The car came with a spare tranny but after I got the double clutch thing down I never even bothered to swap it, got 20 something thousand miles out of it too.
I’m now a compulsive double clutcher and just do it out of habit.
It’s nice to be good to your synchros, you develop better foot/handwork, and learn a little more about controlling weight shift. Plus for some reason it seems to impress people who ride along.

Just like most old school methods, they are still around for a good reason.

i think he was talking about when i start. thats why i was confused. the car has a brand new clutch and i think thats why it spins real bad at a higher rpm.

if the clutch is BRAND NEW, you shouldn’t be launching like that. break it in first.

Grandma shiftin’ not double-clutchin’ like ya should

that movie is going to haunt true import enthusiasts forever. oh well, gotta go swap my sr20 into my civic

i’m puttin an EJ22 in my prelude.
BUUUUUUUUUUUUT, i’ve been thinking of either the Gallo 12, or maybe if i can get the money, a Gallo 24

BTW, i dont actually own a prelude.

that movie pist me off so bad, i wish they made a modern day american grafitie no robbing and stealing, just a cruse night and having fun. no exaduration and all that gay and curious crap. oh well hopefully all the kids that saw that movie get off the import bandwagon and find something else so we dont get hassled so much because the guy running 3’’ piping and a bee in a can mufflar you can hear 10 blocks away in there 1.5 sohc thinking there fast driving stupid and giving real entusiast a bad rap. but what can you do. just try to keep the car legal as possable so the real poeple dont get harassed to much.

Why on earth would you need it for daily driving? Shift at 3 like you should and it drops to around 2, it’s perfect.

Unfortunately, people like that have been around since before the movie and they’ll be around LONG after it’s gone.

…oh, and I wouldn’t necessarily bash the SOHC cars. Under proper boost, they can be quite productive (254whp is an 88 CRX makes for a quick car).

ya but im talking about the cx 8 valve engine with 4-1 headers and chepo exhaust. i knew a guy like this, it was awful. i love all motors that people actually build properly and do the right upgrades.

For pickin up speed if u can dump the clutch quick enuf it will give a little jump. If it actualy adds more than a few inches to if u didnt do it. I dunno, but think about the hell that puts the tranny, crank, and axles thru.

If You Cant Find Them Grid Them!!! You Know If You Drive At A Slow Stady Pace You Can Change Gears With Out Depressin The Cluch You Cant Race Like That Tho!

Four words for you straightliners: No lift to shift.
