Prosecutor: Maplewood man held party after fatally stabbing father, grandmother

MAPLEWOOD — A 26-year-old Maplewood who allegedly held a house party after killing his father and grandmother Saturday night was arrested Monday and charged in their deaths, authorities said.
Dwayne Flourney is charged in the slayings of his father Brian Flourney, 52, and his grandmother Sandra Flourney, 76, said acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn Murray.
Murray, who described the killings as a “very tragic event,” said the 26-year-old stabbed his grandmother multiple times Saturday afternoon and stuffed her into the trunk of a car on the property. Later that day, he attacked his father when he returned home, killing him in the same manner, she said.
Brian Flourney’s body was placed in a chair on a sun porch in the back of the house and covered with a sheet.
Hours after the twin killings, Dwayne Flourney apparently held a house party, inviting over several friends for drinks. Murray did not believe any of the partygoers knew the bodies were in and near the house.
Authorities became aware that something was wrong when Brian Flourney did not show up for work earlier this week. Employees of the Union County Public Defender’s Office called Maplewood police Tuesday and asked them to make a welfare check at the family’s Northview Terrace home. investigators discovered the bodies a short time later.
Dwayne Flourney apparently left the house in his father’s car Sunday. He was arrested at the home of a female friend in Phillipsburg Tuesday night. Murray would not say how authorities tracked him down.
Murray said police recovered a weapon at the scene, which she would only describe as a knife.
Brian Flourney was a senior investigator with the state public defender’s office, according to public records, while Sandra was a retired employee of the Newark Public School system.
The killings sent a wave of shock and sadness through Maplewood, a quiet Essex County town that hasn’t suffered a homicide since a pair of potentially bias-related slayings in 2010.
“In Maplewood, we’ve heard of stolen cars and break-ins, but nothing major. I haven’t really seen anything like this before,” area resident Carol Joseph said. “This is big, very big.”
In 2010, two people were killed in the township in separate incidents. Arthur Downey III, 27, was beaten in his Henry Place apartment in March of that year, in a case police investigated as possibly related to his sexual orientation.
Then in September, a transgender woman and lingerie model, Victoria Carmen White, 28, was fatally shot in a cousin’s Jacoby Street apartment following a night of dancing when two men came to the residence.
Police Chief Robert Cimino said homicide is rare in Maplewood, estimating that there have been no more than 5 murders in the town since 2007.
Dwayne Flourney has been charged with two counts of murder, two counts of felony murder, and one count of receiving stolen property. He remains in custody of the Essex County Correctional facility.
Murray would not say what led to the slayings.
On Tuesday, a neighbor said investigators were going door-to-door about 2:30 p.m. asking residents when they had last seen Sandra Flourney, a longtime resident, or any activity at the house.
Around 8 p.m., a body was removed from the home.
“This is just shocking,” said Luchner Maxi, 18, who lives on the block. “This is a great street. Nothing really happens on this street.”
