I am trying to remove my drive shafts so i can replace the cv-joint boots, but they will not budge.
i have hit them with a sledge hammer, tried using a puller but bent it, used a can of wd-40 and it still won’t move, can someone please give me any suggestions as to how I can pull them off. The centre nut was hard enough to undo and now the shafts won’t come out. It has not been a very good day.
Thanks for sending that but the problem is getting the shaft out of the hub, i have removed the lower balljoint and the damper fork but when i swing the hub out the shaft will not come out.
I assume that you have broken the ball joint loose. Remove the LCA castle nut and pull the ball joint bolt through the LCA. Now the hub assembly can swing in either direction, though the axle will hinder ease of movement.
I put a floor jack under my rotor (used a towell for added cushioning), and jacked the assembly to eliminate all stress from the upper ball joint and to make the axle as level as possible with the tranny.
Note: do this only if you are replacing the axle (not reusing).
With a metal sledge, strike the end of the axle bolt under it starts to move through the hub. Be careful not to strike the hub. Use a crow/pry bar to pull the axle out from behind as well. Both methods will eventually free the axle completely from the hub.
To remove the axle from the tranny/Inter-shaft, pry it outwards, away from the transmission.
Well, i tried to hit it with a sledge hammer but it still would not move. I will try again tomorrow and if it does not move I will pull off the whole hub with drive shaft still attched and get it pressed out.
Get a friend to help you and pry at the back with the crow bar while the other strikes it with a sledge hammer. You have to really slam it hard. It’s a good idea to make sure that the axle is turned/bent to avoid the shock transmitting directly into the tranny.
Well I changed the drive shaft boot without taking the drive shaft out , but I had to remove the whole hub, which was a bitch to put back in with the shaft still connected but I managed to do it. Now I have to do the other side tomorrow, I hope it won’t be the same but I am thinking it will be.
