Hey guys, I don’t post on here much but I’ve been part of this forum in varying degrees for over 10 years now and have owned my '92 GSR for 15.
The problem I am having now is a frustrating and troubling one. When accelerating at 50% or greater throttle in first or second gears there is a moderate amount of drivetrain vibration coming from the front of the vehicle. As far as I know there is no mechanical noise accompanying it however if there was the engine noise drowns it out.
This problem has been around for approximately 18 months but has recently gotten worse. 15 months ago I had both inner CV joint/axles replaced which eliminated another drivetrain vibration - one that the car only suffered while at highway speeds. The shop that did the work was aware of this “other” vibration that only occurs in 1st and 2nd gear and told me that the cause of this was most likely an unevenly worn clutch flywheel. To cure it they recommended replacing it (and obviously the clutch as well). I declined their offer, as the clutch was perfectly fine at the time.
Does that sound right? I’ve mentioned the “it’s the flywheel causing the vibration” theory to several car buddies and they say they’ve never heard of such a thing.
Vehicle background:
-304k miles
-driver’s side front wheel bearing is original, passenger front has been replaced twice (most recently 15 months ago)
-most suspension bushings are still original
-motor/transmission mounts were all replaced in 2007, approximately 50k miles ago
-clutch displays no symptoms of being worn out, was installed roughly 160k miles ago (in 2000)
The vibration is non-existent in every other gear and otherwise the car runs well. 30+ mpg hwy is easily accomplished and the engine doesn’t burn any oil.
I’m going to have the smartest Honda guy I know in the area take it for a test drive this week but I would love any help I could get from the online community! Thank you all in advance!
