The high pressure hose for my power steering system is leaking badly so I had to remove the power steering belt for the time being. This is the second week I’ve driven without power steering; I can’t get the new hose just yet since it’s rather pricey. How long is it okay to drive without power steering? I’ve heard that not having the pump going may damage the rack.
i was without power steering for two weeks before i put it in the shop…didnt know it was my hose that blew out (all of a sudden lost of power steering) but my system was fine…so far…i’ve been driving a month since the repair.
i got rid of all of my lines and everything last year. took it a month or two before it started squeaking and thats probably only because it didnt have much fluid in it. im putting that manual crx rack in here sometime
I actually did the same thing. Thing was leaking so I just cut the belt. Been driving like that for a couple months now, no problems ever came up so you should be good.
had my power steering off for 2 years and no problems i love it though
I too have done the power steering delete using the power rack did it on both DAs so like 4yrs now no problems.
That doesnt really address the OPs question being that he hasnt done a PS delete…
But having the pump installed with no belt should not cause any adverse effects to your PS system. Leaving it hooked up actually makes it slightly easier to turn the vehicle than when you remove the pump/hardlines and loop it.
Nothing to worry about Neil. I drove with the PS belt removed for over a year with no issues… Once I swapped, I removed it all and looped it. Found it to be slightly more difficult to steer, but nothing too crazy.
and also, fluid might run out of your reservoir
Why would fluid come out of the reservoire? If its not over-filled, overflow is virtually impossible.
i’m sure he’s talking about the regular leak…
Ahh, gotcha. Yes the leak would continue, but at a slower rate being that the system is not under pressure.
having experienced a blown power steering hose…it doesnt have to happen slowly…mine happened while turning. either way, OP, you’ll be ok
