Engine Cleaner/detailer.

My engine is really dirty (just bought the car), and I was wondering if theres a good product out there to remove some spilled oil, grime, and maybe a little bit of rust without damaging any of the wiring etc.

I looked at concentrated engine degreasers, but it seems a bit harsh to be using that. You guys ever go to a used car dealership and see the nice detailed engine bays? What kind of products should I buy to get it that clean?

This won’t solve your rust situation, but one method is too try Simple Green at full strength, use repeatedly if needed. If using a harsher product, spray your surronding car bay area with water first, just in case you get drifting or overspray.

I would first just go to the car wash; and with a cheapo $.99 engine degreaer from autozone, powerwash the entire engine bay. Bring a few things to cover up your distibutor and wires and you can pretty much spray everything else. Get off the major portion of crap then just use simple green like mentioned above and wipe everythign else by hand.

A clean engine bay is not a pretty shiney one. The dealers use armor-all crap and make everything all shiny. All that does is attract dirt and grime to the engine parts much faster than if you clean it well and do not use any coating.

what works for me
is
1 bottle of engine degressor steamer(penzoil)
1 bottle of engine brite

do the whole engine with penzoil one …cover all eletrical parts
let it set
scrub with toothbrush the engine parts/dirty parts

then hose it off
now spray engine bright foam
do the same
hose it off

it should be so clean
and get valosline or motor oil and rub all rubber lines

I picked up a can of Gunk Citrus Engine Brite “Engine cleaner and Detailer”

It was the most expensive engine cleaner/detailer I could find at Canadian tire, and it says its safe on most plastic/rubber/paint if used as directed. Also says it leaves a protective coating to make it easier to keep the engine clean. I guess Ill give it a shot and see what happens.

Although what I was originally looking for was some sort of foaming engine shampoo, when I was younger my dad used to use a product like that on his 72’ cutlass, all we had to do was tape plastic around the ignition and intake and just spray it on, let it sit for about 10-15 mins, and hose off. really cleaned it up. Would these spray cans of Engine degreaser/cleaner be something kinda like that?
