engine dies while running

i was in first gear , just got out of a parking lot then the car stumbles then dies. i tried restarting but to no avail. had to tow it to the house.

been searching the posts and it’s most likely it’s the igniter and the ignition coil ( i hope not ). is there anything else i should check???

was trying to take out the screw that holds the distrbutor rotor and the head of the screw is a li’l stripped so the screw driver doesn’t bite. i have to get that gadget “screw out” thingy. i just wish i had another car cause everyone is at work. :mad:

replace ur fuel filter

check to see if you have sparks… it’s most likely the coil or igniter that has gone bye bye…

What actually happens when you try cranking the engine? Does it crank, do you hear any unusual noises, etc.?

hum… maybe timing belt… you should remove the valve cover and check the timing belt… don’t crank the engine if the belt is snapped…

i’m pretty sure there is an easier way to check the belt… but I don’t know it!

the engine turns but it doesn’t start, no unusual noises.
i checked for spark by using a timing light and i didn’t see the light strobing, so no spark.

the problem now is i can’t get off the screw that holds the rotor so i can’t check the the igniter and coil.

the timing belt is ok, and hasn’t skipped a tooth. they lined up perfectly

alright check this, this will solve, if you have ALL the follwing symptoms… its the ignitor, ill tell you how to fix

car turns wont start

sparks smell like gas(maybe since i cranked so much)

when it died… did it just cut off/ not stumble off

if you pass this

Your ignitor is dead.

screws stripped? no problem, take of distributer
-mark where it was etc.

  • that vicegrips…clamp the small screws on the ignitor…try to turn them
    -its much easier when its on a table infront of you :slight_smile:
  • once u get that, $96.00 oem honda ignitor(pricey$$)
    get one, swap it in.

put it in , attach all wires back together and …well jus tthrow some new sparkplugs in Vpower…i got bosch +4…(free) so i used them

then crank the engine it will start, if not kick my ass

use vicegrips to get dist. off …i found it easier then other tools

is your ecu giving you a code?

that should be the first thing b4 you start pulling things apart.

vtec, you have a good point for most things, but i forgot to mention there is no code. i didnt have a code when this happend. maybe the comp. doesnt it read it since the engine still turns over. but i didnt have a code. ignitor did it for me. the honda mechanics agreed when i told them my story and what happend etc.

thanks for all your help, i took off the distributor and struggled to take off the screw and finally i got it out.

checked everything and the igniter was the culprit.
yep the dealer raped me for $90 for the igniter. they told me it’s the newer version and it’s better.

changed the igniter and it started up right away.
