I’ve got a 92 GS-R and its been doing this for a while now I use Mobile 1 Synthetic. Its eating an enormous amount of Motor Oil. I used 10W30, and after I noticed my engine oil light went on I checked pulled my car over and looked at the oil… There was none whatsoever. I bought 3 bottles of 5W30 from ESSO and I noticed 2 weeks after I had the same problem. Any ideas?
Are you blowing smoke? If so i would tend to think it is your piston rings. That is if you’re not leaking Oil…My GS-R was burning oil too but not that bad…My problem was worn rings
I’m not leaking oil I’ve checked in my garage and at my work where I park it most. I have to check out the smoke theory, does the smoke have to be white or black to assume that the Piston Rings are done?
Prior to buying the car the owner did use Regular Oil. I changed it to synthetic. Would going back fix the problem?
I dunno, it probably won’t smoke much at a standstill but I’ve noticed that when I gun it at night and there’s a car behind me I can see the smoke in my rearview mirror because of the cars headlights behind me. Otherwise you can have a friend follow you and look for smoke and see if it smells like burning oil.
I’d see black smoke even in the day when i gunned it…especially when i’d punch it approaching 8000rpms…Do a compression test… that will let you know a bit more…If you’re compression is way off then you know something is not right
I did a compression test it turned out fine. It was 190/190/195/200.
I used 5W30 because when I noticed that I had no oil I needed to get some fast, so I went to the nearest Gas Station and Bought the only Mobile 1 Synthetic oil they had 5W30. The engine has around 160,000 KMs. Its not much at all for our gen cars.
I’m thinking of doing an oil change an checking then when I loose oil.
I also noticed no smoke come out of my car but since I haven’t cleaned my car I noticed that the color of the tip of my tail pipe was Black.
I went to Canadian Tire (Hardware Store), I was about to get the 15W50, the guy practically forced me to get 10W30. I told him my problem he was still forcing the 10W30 plus some Engine Flush chemical. Anyway I changed my oil this morning I will check out my mileage and the amount of oil I have in my car, and get back to you guys.
From what I’ve read, going from natural to synthetic oil will likely make you LOSE more oil, as the synthetic cleans the gum out of the seals and therefore allows more oil to seep past. Going from synthetic to natural oil, on the other hand, should help you lose LESS oil, as the natural oil gums up a bit and almost seals the gaps itself.
Do a search on this, I’m sure you’ll find some info.
Originally posted by PmDaWg so your recommending on changing my oil back to regular… No repairs are needed to any of the internals?
If you’re LEAKING oil or having extreme blow-by… then yes, I’d look into using regular oil next change. If you’re burning oil, maybe check your pcv valve, etc… and see what’s up.
No internal or external repairs have to be made… except the oil filter of course. Maybe go to semi-synth for this oil change and then to 100% regular oil on the next one… it’s up to you.

PS: Ask the shop what they recommend when going from synth. to regular… they may know something that I don’t.

Going from synthetic to natural not only cleans out old gummed up oil - it dries out old seals and causes them to crack, severly and quickly
I had a couple of synthetic oil changes done right after i bought the car and next thing i know my valve cover gasket and my cam seal almost disintegrate within a month of each other
once you dry out the seals, only thing to do is replace them…
moral of the story, use synthetic from the beginning right after replacing old seals, not a difficult job to do either

btw black smoke is fuel which is normal in 5-8k range during WOT.
normal blowby for a DOHCVTEC motor is 1 quart every 3k. If you’re using more oil than that, it could be a few things that need to be diagnosed, most of which have already been mentioned.
as for going back to organic, that’s not neccesary. Doing this to “fix” the problem will get you nowhere just fix the real problem whatever it may be and continue using synthetic. And as someone already said, you will use slightly more oil with synthetic oil however the life of your internals increase substantially when synthetic oil is used and that is worth doing a lot of routine maintenance to your G2 that you prolly had to do anyway.
