Engine Oil Poll Thread - Post Up Your Experiences & Your Preferred Engine Oil

So after a fairly thorough search, I can’t really find a current discussion on what the consensus is on more “modern” engine oils for the 2nd Gen Integra/B18A1. A few months ago someone posted that their car was burning Mobile 1 at a surprising rate, and I have also moved away from Mobil 1 in my cars over the last few years for various reasons. In my Integra, for my last oil change I used Castrol Edge 5w-30 (black bottle), but I have since found out that this is simply a re-brand of their old Syntec product. I also was surprised that my engine burned a quart already after just about 1,800 miles!

I’ve been researching online a bit about a newer GF-5/SN specification for oil manufacturers, but its confusing. Was wondering what the rest of this community uses.

Maybe post up your year, make, engine and miles too, for context (I have a 1990 DB1, stock B18A1 with 226,000 miles). Thanks!

Props to you for the mileage! For performance setups, I recommend and use Shell Rotella T6 5w40. With that many miles, I don’t think it would hurt to try it. However, for high mileage Honda’s and Subaru’s I have always kept it simple and used conventional oil (usually Castrol GTX). In general, if a Honda motor is burning oil, there is a problem somewhere and the oil type isn’t going to be a magic fix.

My DB2 had been in storage for 8 years without an oil change so I just threw in the cheapest Castrol 10w30 around and I will change it after I put a couple hundred km on it. Before I built the engine I ran Royal Purple but built the engine a bit loose as it is going to see boost and be flogged on. I notice with the 10w30 the oil pressure is a bit lower than it used to be so I will probably move to a 10w40 or 10w50. I need to do some research but like the idea of Amsoil’s new high zinc oil.

Previous motor was 81mm ls/vtec with usdm itr pistons and stock b17 cams. New motor is 81.5mm eagle rods, SRP pistons, usdm GSR cams, hx35 turbo

on two of my civics , i still have one , are/were at about 150,000 Mi, i ran 5W-30 , until i was referred to use Rotella T6 5w-40, which i hear many good things about. I will probably end up using that in my integra, which i previously used 5w-30 castrol i believe.

i got a b18b in my 1990 ls with a few mods. i just did a full engine rebuild and only got 75 miles on it. before the rebuild im not sure how many miles it had. i have always ran quaker state 10-40 and it never burns oil. its rare if i have to add any oil

In my 1993 gs b18a1 with 265k I usually just use whatever dino oil is on sale at walmart in 5w30 or 10w30. I’ll probably pick up some pennzoil high mileage for the next change as it ran good on the regular pennzoil conventional in the past and my rear main seal drips.

I am using Penzoil 5W-30 in my 91GS Integra. The engine is a standard B18A1 and uses about 1 qt per 1200 miles. I’m not blowing any blue smoke at start up or cruise. No external oil leaks except some seepage from crankshaft seal behind flywheel. The engine/car has 282,400 miles on it and gas mileage averages 32.5 MPG.

Great responses so far, thanks everyone.

Very interesting link, regarding flat-tappet cam lifter engines (of which I believe the B18A is one) and Zinc additives in motor oil.

I use Amsoil OE 5w-30 in my '92 GS (with 350,000km on it) and their OE 10w-30 in the GS-R (205,000km). I lose about 3/4 of a quart over the 5,000 km change interval. The loss is far less using the Amsoil stuff than when I was using the Quaker State high mileage oil of the same weight.
