Engine stalled .... engine could start but will not turn over

My Integra is a 1991 LS 5 speed with 204,000 miles. Whlle driving 3 days ago in local street, the engine light came on and engine stalled at the same time. I tried to start but the engine won’t turn over. After resting for 1 min. on the side, I was able to start the car again. But 3 min. later, it stalled again. I did the same thing, waited for 1-2 min. and it started fine again.

Well, today I got the car back from the shop with new ignition coil and new distribution cap and rotor. I drove in the freeway for 7 miles and when I was 100 yards from my house, it did it again. The engine light came on and car just died and shut off. There aren’t any knocking at all, it was a smooth stall. When I tried to start the engine, the engine could start but will not turn over. I did that for 3 times then decided to wait for about 2 min. Then the car was able to start and I was able to drive home.

Since I have already change 3 parts already, what is the next possibility that can go wrong. Please advise. Thanks.
Joseph

if the engine light came on, then check to see what code it is throwing.

the not being able to start without resting a while is similiar to the symptoms of a bad main relay… however it did it while you were driving… my car did that to me a few times before i figured out what it was… it was bad wiring… i guess one of my ignition wires worked itself loose from the alarm job that was done… took me a while… but then again… that was my car…

but check your ignition wiring.

engine could start but would not turn over?

Does that mean you jump started it? Are you hearing the starter motor at all? or is there silence when you turn the key? what you wrote makes me wonder how you got it started? from what you described its probably a code 9 or 4 which means you’ll need a new distributor. pull the code. that will give you a better idea. If you don’t know how to check the code look in the teg tips articles.

Hi Smikey, how do you determine the code?

19 years later, I have this issue with my '92 GS 5-speed at 180k. It just randomly dies. It happens whether I’m actively driving or out-of-gear at a light. The engine light comes on, and the engine sputters to a halt. Pushing the accelerator while it is on the “road to death” has no impact (it doesn’t inject gas into the engine to spike the RPMs).

It’s not a problem if I’m on a quiet street or a wide one where I can pull over. It’s not good if I’m on a freeway onramp or in the left lane waiting to turn with traffic behind me. As a result, I can’t regularly drive my car.

As far as parts go, what I’ve changed/replaced before this stuff started happening:

  1. AEM 21-402R cold air intake (whose filter I recently cleaned just over a year ago)
  2. Greddy SP2 cat-back exhaust (changed ~2 decades ago)
  3. Replaced the main fuel relay years ago (and now it’s making me wonder whether it was an OEM or aftermarket part).
  4. Original ECU died a few years ago; took it to a shop who got a replacement from a pick-n-pull yard since they’re no longer being made by Honda.

Could any of those be contributing, or do y’all think it’s something else? I’ll dig around to see if I can find other related threads. I’m also in the SF Bay Area, so if you know of a Honda/Acura specialist who can handle stuff like this, DM me. Thx!

You can get an ECU new (rebuilt) now, if you think that’s the problem. Are you getting a code from the ECU?

My immediate thought is ignitor and/or ignition coil. Also, check your battery connections for corrosion. I’ve had really weird electrical issues when the battery terminals are corroded.

Ugh, I don’t have the gear to get the code out of the ECU. I am considering a rebuilt ECU because a “new” PnP unit is still old. Thinking about taking it to a local shop for a full diagnosis but the best Acura/Honda shops require me getting on a freeway, which is a risk.

In the meantime, I’ll check the battery terminals and dig around the ignitor to see if anything looks suspect… thx!

All you need is paperclip to jump the plug to get codes in a 92-93

Yeah I was also confused when you stated needing “gear”. This isn’t an OBD-2 vehicle
