I posted this in the regular forum, but i figure you guys might have more to say about this topic over in here.
I have questions regarding engine swapping and rebuilding. i have a 91 integra ls. I want to start modifying, only thing, the engine is old, it is loud as hell, it sounds like an out of control sprinkler.
Everything under the hood sounds loose and when you drive it, it really doesn’t have much pull at all. There are 150 thousand miles on it and if i am building it up i want it to have lower miles on the engine. So this is where the rebuild or swap comes in. I have to do a lot of body work on it and i am trying to be economical and not spend all the money that i have on fixing it all up immediately. I need to keep some for saving unfortunately. and i am in college so i only work a little bit.
My friends are all trying to get me to do a b16a1 with either an ls or b20z long block bottom end, but with install both of those set ups with cost me about 4000 dollars and i really don’t think i need all that. i understand how much low end torque i would get but the money apect kills that idea. I am aware that the b16 has very low end torque if any at all compared to my ls, so if i swap it in, i won’t feel any different if any at all between that and the 1.8. More so in the mid to high range when vtec kicks in. Plus, my friends say no one here will want to work on a jdm engine because they don’t know them here. Only a few speed shops will. That could just be talk.
But, i am seriously thinking about rebuilding the engine, putting performance valves, spring, cams, gears, all that on there. And porting and polishing the whole thing out. I don’t know the specifics of engine rebuiling, i.e. the costs and what it entails, but i want to save some more of my money and i like the 1.8 liter that i have, and i figure with some nice parts on it, i can make it run with the best of them. and it’ll be a little different, everyone seems to be swapping now. Like i said i don’t need lightning speed at all, just having a nice clean looking car, that runs well, and is reasonably quick.

i was thinking about the b16 swap, then was gonna go with the ls/vtec, then the crvtec, then i was gonna sell my car for a gsr, and now i’ve finally decided just to rebuild my b18. For the basic rebuild alone i was quoted $ 1,105.00 this was the lowest price i found. To go along with this rebuild im going to throw in some crower 403’s, cam gears, and some type of pistons, im not sure what kind yet, maybe type r, b16, im not sure. And then im going to have the head bored out along with the intake manifold. I figure the cost for all this, will be some where around 2500.

Sweet. You sound like you were in the same situation i am in. I think the way you went is the route i am gonna take. Cause 4 grand is a lot of money for a swap. I figured rebuiilding would be somewhere areound where you are with your price. I can handle that though. And there will still be plenty of power with bolt ons and room for other upgrades. It won’t be blazing fast, but either way it’ll go. Thanks for your help.
