there is a very skinny wire going from the engine to the chassis of the car on my 91 ls.(front left side of the engine standing at the headlight) the wire was very badly frayed and looked tacky to be honest. while a friend and i were putting in my new amps i took the wire off and replaced it with a 4 gauge wire from the chassis to the negative terminal. my brother said honda doesn’t put wires on engines for no reason. what does the wire do? i think it is a ground for the engine am i right? if i replaced the wire with another one shouldn’t that be sufficient? i did notice the wire had 2 grounding spots on the engine and one on the chassis, is this important? Thanks
Yes it’s just an engine ground wire… You can replace it with a similar wire, just make sure it goes to the same spots as the original.
If it’s flat and braided, then it’s a bonding strap. Similar to a ground wire but it doesn’t go to the battery, it puts the block and body of the car at the same potiential. These will usually turn black or look burnt if the car has a bad ground(anyone else own a VW before, you will know what I’m talking about). I replaced all of mine with blue 4awg, over kill but it works and looks good to.
