Exedy Race clutchs

couldn’t find a good forum to put this in, so i put it in this one…

I’m gettin an exedy race clutch put in with my b20… I juss wanna know what exactly is their, “stage 2” sort of rank clutch? And is 280 installed a good price? Any website for exedy?

Is it their organic, ceremetallic, or racing clutch? If it’s the ceremetallic then it’s about equal to a Clutchmaster’s Stage IV. The organic is a little better than stock, basically just a better pressure plate. I know nothing about Exedy’s “racing” clutches other than that they are in no way streetable. Try www.groupbuycenter.com and look under transmission for their site. HTH.

as far as i know exedy makes 3 clutches for our cars. However they don’t refer to them as “stages”.

The first clutch is basically just an oem replacement. Possibly a little better than the real stock clutch… but pretty much the same. You can get one of these for about $100-$110.

The 2nd clutch is their Organic Racing clutch. Its a step up from stock, i don’t really know how it would compare to a CM stage 2 or 3 or an ACT… but what i hear is that its a pretty good clutch. This is what i ordered for my car. I paid $269.50 shipped. If its for a 90-91 tranny its a little more expensive.

The third clutch they make is a cerametallic 3 puck clutch. Again, i don’t know the details, but probably a pretty good clutch. But since its a puck style clutch there isn’t going to be as much material on there, so it won’t last as long as the normal type of disk. I think these go for three hundred something, i dont’ rememgber exactly.

The best prices on exedy clutches (they have all 3 types) is www.clutchcityonline.com Thats where i ordered mine from, haven’t gotten it yet though.

Kolin, $280 installed? that sounds too good to be true. But wait, is that $280 installed when the do the engine swap? If so then it had better be the 2nd type of clutch i mentioned. If that price is for a normal clutch job (meaning they have to drop the tranny and all that extra labor) then its probably just the 1st clutch i mentioned. By the way, when is the b20 gonna be done? I’m feverishly trying to get my b17 underway. I finally got the block to john and he’s took it to Benson’s today! yippee!

hey colin,

Yea, its the same shop that's doing my motor swap. When they took my engine out and looked at my original clutch, the disk was fuked. So they told me either 230 for the exedy oem clutch, or 280 for the "stage 2" clutch, which is the organic clutch that is a step above the oem one....well i talked to a couple of my friends, seems to be a good deal...

HOPEFULLY i get it back saturday, they said friday, but it’d be more convenient for my to pick it up sat…saw my baby with no engine in it today…looked sad…hehe

yeah, if its $280 installed for the one that i’m getting (orgainic racing clutch) then its a good deal. $230 for the oem is a rip. you could get the clutch from clutchcityonline and then have the shop install it for only a couple bucks more. Since the engine and tranny are out and apart its not that much more work. good deal man!

Such good info Colin, thanks.

thanks bro. i’m gonna try and write a review once the clutch is broken in. I haven’t even tried the clutch yet, but i know exedy is quality (afterall, they do make the toda clutches), and at a price like $270 shipped! wow. For me the price made it possible for me to get a performance clutch instead of a just keeping the stock one… cause there is no way i could have afforded a CM, ACT, or Centerforce.
