So, I got pulled over a couple days ago because my exhaust is too loud. I think based off the situation that night with the police officer standing outside and driving by at such a late hour he might of had nothing to do. I passed fine through emissions but they weren’t really testing for sound, just anything out of the ordinary and extremely loud. And driving through town is never a problem. I have a Greddy header, cat, vibrant “bullet” resonator, and a Skunk2 Megapower Universal Muffler(silencer installed), on 2.25". I would like to try and keep the Greddy and the Skunk2 Muffler but I was curious if there was another setup out there that could quiet down the volume/tone per say. Would a different style/bigger/longer resonator help? Is there an inline muffler you could install before the Skunk2? I know that might have adverse affects on the exhaust but…
is it a fix it ticket?
go to police station ask for decibel law limit and reading.
if they cant provide 1 ask maybe to have ticket writen off presented that your emission was actual legal.
PRO TIP: be kind and dont be a dick.
Get a reading first, there is no way your car is that loud with a resonator and silencer.
i have same problem… got stock header, flowmaster 2.25inch cat, Skunk2 Mega Power Exhaust(2.25inch with resonator)… was told by one of the members here who welds nice exhausts locally… to add another resonator
Get a reading, I passed the decibel on my ek with a gsr, hytech rep header, 2.5 cat, 2.5 piping back with just a single resonator.
I’d guess that the problem is your Skunk2 muffler. Believe it or not a lot of “mufflers” are actually amplifiers and yours is likely one of those. With a stock exhaust if you remove the muffler altogether and just run the rest of the b-pipe it’s louder than stock obviously but still not all that loud. Yet you see otherwise stock Hondas driving around that are loud as hell and the only mod is that the muffler was replaced with a cheap “racing” one. These are actually louder than having no muffler at all!
I would suggest you ditch that Skunk2 in favor of something more mellow. If you’re not willing to get rid of the muffler then you need to add a second muffler or a second resonator. I’d look into products from Burns Stainless (expensive), Thermal R&D, ES tuning, or even the ubiquitous Magnaflow.
Or just get a full catback that you know is quiet - RSR, Greddy, and Tanabe all have relatively quite systems out there.
Yes you have to ditch the skunk 2!
Get a greddy sp1, sp2 or a RSR exmag
No ticket, just got mentioned to check into it. I told him I’ve been through emissions with and without the silencer. Without the silencer they wouldn’t even test me. Supposedly, I have to drive a couple towns away in order to get it checked by them “DEQ”. And ya, I was kind of thinking the skunk2 was one of the “amplifying” mufflers (pretty straight through not much to muffle). I like the looks of it and it sounds pretty good with the silencer out (in tunnels and what-not) I did a little research into the cat-backs, like years back but didn’t see much besides a lot of crappy aftermarkets. I’ll have to search harder. Just for something cheap and for the time being I was looking into a second muffler/bigger resonator. I tried looking up Skunk2 Megapower cat-back and it seems the resonator is almost as big in round as the muffler. My resonator is like half the size. Forgot the length at the moment.
I have Plm toda rep to Plm test pipe to skunk 2 mega power on the racer, LOUD!
On my daily I just recently got these edge preformance headers they helped but that’s connected to Megan test pipe then connector to tenabe lol there both loud it’s obviously throttle controlled when I’m cruising it’s decently quite but when I punch it that raspy deep honda noise comes in, I been stopped before and simply said they stole my Oem exhaust lol I got away with it
Same with mine, quiet in certain ranges until you get on it. I am looking to tone it down just smidge on the low end but still have the throatiness when I need it.
I would recomend the Rsr then
Good luck finding one! That would be ideal though!
I would vouch for the RSR. You can order it online or get it directly from Japan.
I have found mine off local cl lol for a find in a half
apexi ws2.
you might try some baffle inserts: http://www.carchemistry.com/cc-inserts/
these particular inserts are a little pricey, but try searching on ebay, they have lots of them for motorcycles…
good luck
