Fact or myth....

I have heard from people that the CEL is programmed to come on at a certain mileage regardless of whether the engine needs service or not. Can this be debunked or is this factual. The reason I ask is that my 1993 teg, the CEL recently came on. It came on a week after having some engine work done to the car. It doesn’t come one as soon as I start the car. It may take up to 15 minutes for the light to come on. If I turn off the car and immediately restart it the light will go off. The car idles just fine when the light is on and there is no noticeable change at all when the light is on. Any ideas/suggestions?

Check the code.

What he said

on my 91 i can check cel code by just move the carpet where ecu sit it will flash the code and tell u what its for but but on 93 i dont know how i think u have to jump the plug cel will flash to tell u i dont know why honda made 92-93 different from 90-91 though

Not hard to do on a 92/93

Jump/bridge the connector, turn the key to the Acc position, count the flashes…

No, the CEL doesn’t randomly come on as a ‘service’ indicator, it comes on when a fault is detected.

That’s a myth. I had a similar problem and it was my TDC sensor in the distributor. Only noticeable difference was it was a little longer to start. It can be many things though.

what ^^^ said…had a similar issue to what you are describing, but in my case it was the VSS throwing the code… I had my speedo cable break and the tabbed end that went into the VSS on the tranny kept popping itself out of the socket and tossing the code… would go away when I shut the car off, but then pop back up 10-15 minutes into driving usually when shifting gears.
