Failed Smog Need help Quick !

I failed the low speed 15mph test. Here’s what I got :

@15 mph
%Co2 Meas 14.5
%o2 Meas 0.1
HC(PPM) Max-85 Avg-38 Meas-172
CO(%) Max-.76 Avg-.18 Meas-.68
NO(PPM) Max-807 Avg-420 Meas-660

I just replaced the Cat. and I recently replaced plugs,wire,cap,rotor,fuel filter, and fuel cap. I did the O2 sensor 3-4 months ago with a cheap autozone one when I had my bad cat. on.

Need help quick cause I’m selling it and need to pass !

Also I have a cel light and the code is one quick blink so its either the o2 sensor or air intake temp. I don’t know !

Help !

What brand o2 sensor did you use? I would use Denso or NGK only. That new cat doesn’t seem like its working good if its new, or you didn’t heat it up good enough because I have the oem cat and my numbers are way lower than yours.

Make sure you change the spark plugs, cap and rotor, fuel filter, check to make sure vacuum lines are good.

You need to give an accurate code reading. Go check the blinks again and then check the CEL code it gives from teg tips.

Oil change, maybe a hi mileage oil?

The cat is brand 2 weeks new ! It flashes 1 time and its a quick flash. I have a new o2 sensor I can throw on and I have the oil to do a oil change .

Code 1 = Oxygen Sensor

You’re failing probably because of the O2 sensor code. HC=Hydro Carbons which is a mixture of gas and water. HC is a result from incomplete fuel combustion and from fuel evaporation.

Are you saying you have another new O2 sensor ready to put on? What brand? Do you have the plug type or universal?. Also, how is your timing set?

Smog is formed when nitrogen oxides ( NOx ) and hydrocarbon gases ( HC ) are exposed to sunlight.

NOx is produced when there is to much heat and/or pressure in the combustion chamber.This can be caused by numerous engine conditions or by Smog component failure.

HC is fuel that went through the engine without being burned.This emission also can be caused by various engine conditions or by smog component failure.

There are five gases that are monitored when doing a Smog Check.They are as follows.

HC = Hydrocarbons
CO = Carbon Monoxide
NOx = Nitrogen Oxides
CO2 = Carbon Dioxide
O2 = Oxygen

Hycrocarbons (HC)*
A list of common causes of HC related smog check failure:

  1. Ignition Timing Advanced above specifications.Timing is measured in degrees. before or after Top dead center. If your vehicle is required to be at 10b degrees and instead is set at 16b degrees your HC emissions will increase. ( b = before top dead center ) .

  2. Ignition system problems. Parts like the ignition coil, distributor cap, distributor rotor, ignition wires, spark plugs.

  3. Vacuum leaks, Gasket leaks that cause vacuum leaks. Broken, disconnected or misrouted vacuum hoses.Vacuum component failure such as a power brake booster.This causes a very large vacuum leak.

  4. Catalytic converter failure. (Avoid using a catalytic converter as a bandage. Fix the source problem and then move to the converter.)

  5. Air injection system problems. ( Smog pump and related components )

  6. Engine damage (burned valve, low or no compression in one or more cylinders).

  7. Sensor problems and or computer problems can cause a Smog Check failure.

I got the Teg home yesterday and jack it up to change out the o2 sensor and low and behold the damn wire was cut. It was completely seperated. So I respliced it back on and whata ya know ? I passed ! But by 1 point. I brought the car nice and hot an he wasn’t going to do it a first cause he wanted to close early but I told him my buyer is picking the car up tomorrow and this was the contingency tohim getting it. So it sat and cooled down for a little more than an hour.

i wouldn’t doubt it if the unplugged o2 burned the cat in the process. that’s what those readings lean towards. high nox and high hc. i’d expect to change it before your next smog inspection. always a good idea to use an efficient o2. not the cheap ones. it’ll save you from replacing your cat year after year

Yeah ! I’ll be trading my Teg for $1500 today ! I’m glad it pass on its though cause I did illegally the last time. Its actually runiing pretty decent. But on to other things like an audi or another subie, we’ll see. Thanks everyone for you inputs !
