first time at the track sucked! very dissapointed

i went to an 1/8 mile track lastnight in dallas GA and it was full of rednecks in mustangs and camaros, there were 6 or 7 imports out of like 200 cars…

well first run i didnt know how those staging lights worked so im leaned over talking to the dude on the track about the lights…all of a sudden he yells “GO GO” and when i look up the damn light is green so i just said fuck it and went anyway. this was against a 91 civic hatchback with LS motor. so that guy screwed me up and i got -

left lane
reaction- .797
60ft - 3.961
ET@ 594ft - 11.965
1/8 mile ET- 12.667
1/8 mph - 64.11

this track sucks, it was uneven. when i was in the right lane on the 2nd run i let my foot off the brake and started rolling backwards! so i got a shitty launch. the tires spun a little bit, caught, and then the car bogged down a little bit. this run was against a turbo’d jetta. we were about even off the line and through 1st gear. 2nd gear he starts pullin like a mutha and as soon as i hit 3rd i was catchin up to him quick, but by that time it was over. he beat me by like .1 second. if were were in the 1/4 i think i would have spanked him.

reaction - 1.172
60ft - 2.701
ET@ 594ft - 10.593
1/8 mile ET - 11.297
1/8 mph - 64.00

i have a 90 GS with jdm b16a - just i/e but im still disapointed. i could not launch for shit! these are probably the worst b16 times i’ve ever seen. well i also had a car full of shit. like 4 yearbooks, a bunch of clothes and shoes in the backseat, a system and spare in the trunk, and i had the power steering belt on. i had no time to prepare at all so hopefully next time i’ll get better times.
time to hit the 1/4 mile track and see how bad i can fuck up!
peace

If I were you, I would stick to the 1/8 for now and get some skills at launching your car and getting good 60ft times. And work on those lights too, always launch on the third light and you should get close to a perfect every time.

yeah, that shit in your cars killin you. i also imagine you can launch real high w/ the b16 as compared to an ls. less torque, higher redline. that might help your bogging.

and i dont think you should let the other guy intimidate you. since your time starts as soon as you leave, not when the light turns green. you could sit there for 30 secs, and then go. i think. ive never dragged my car before

The EXACT same thing happened to me lol.

gravel on the track//unable to go around burnout box + 38psi in my worn out 712’s owned my traction.

true and true

I never take stuff like my spare or seats out. I don’t care about how fast my car will be stripped, since I’ll never drive it that way.

yea it sucks ass driving a stripped car. i hear every little road noise now and all kinds of squeaks and rattles since the seats have been out. i think all that weight made a difference though.

4 year books - 20lbs
shoes, clothes, cd cases - 10lbs
huge box w/ 15" and 800w amp - 50lbs
seats, carpet in back, and plastic board thing - 20lbs
removing ps belt - maybe 3-4hp

so thats a good 100lbs i took out, plus i would take out the spare and my tools when i run so thats like 150lbs all together…not bad if you ask me.
i think i could shave a good second off my next run if i keep the car like it is now. i would also run the race gas, 'cause last time i had half a tank of 93. on the track’s pump its 103 :burnout:

Hey John, did you run at Dallas?

I thought I launched poorly my first time (the whole cd player falling in front of my shifter and keeping me from going into third incident).

What rpm’s did you launch at? I launched mine at about 4500 rpm with lot’s of tire spin and still managed a 10.8 in the 1/8th. Let’s get together and get some practice runs since we basically have the same setup.

yea i ran at dallas.
i dont know what i launched at either run haha. first time i was talking to the dude who works at the track while we were staging and he just said GO! so i looked up at the lights which were already green and just took off. the second run i couldnt get a good lauch because in the right lane the pavement is uneven. as the lights were going down i let my foot off the brake and rolled backwards :ghetto: so i was paying more attention to that then my rpm’s…that was the run i spun a bit then bogged down - should have launched higher obviously. i also want to try feathering vs. dumping the clutch, see what works best for me. maybe before i go i’ll go to an empty parking lot in an industrial area or something and practice.
i might go back this friday if the weather is good. i tired to go again last friday but it started raining. but yea man i really need the practice so if you’re up for this weekend lets do it.

I’m down for friday night. I get off of work at seven. How late do they run on Friday night? Maybe we can make a mini meet out of it?

Two things.
First, I’m pretty sure that 100 pounds won’t make a whole second of a difference, maybe if you dropped all that weight and were a really shitty driver the first time.

Second, don’t waste your money on race gas, it won’t help you one little, incy, wincy, teeny, tiny bit! It may even make you slower. I wouldn’t even put 93 in (unless you are a GSR or turbo or something) I’d put 87 in. You won’t get better power or gas milage using higher octane gas.

true. i must admit i was a very shitty driver the first time. on the 12.6 run i hit the rev limiter in 1st, on top of a shitty launch. the second run i got an even shittier launch but still made better time somehow, i guess hitting the rev limiter on the last run really made a difference. in the video you can see the front end dip down when i hit it. i was also nervous and had never been to a track before so im pretty confident i can hit at least a high 10 next time.

and about the race gas - i have a jdm b16a so wouldn’t it at least help a little? since its higher compression than a GSR? 93 is all i run since the next step under that in GA is 89…i was under the impression that anything under 91 is bad for vtec motors

btw thanks for the help, i need all i can get
later

on friday nights its “test and tune” from 5-10, and its only $10 to get in and free to run your car. yea see if any others from the GA crew want to go. as long as the weather is good im there for sure. and im takin friday off work 'cause i have to go to court for that barrett pkwy bs. im supposed to have trial by jury that day but my lawyer bought me some time by filing for an appeal…i think thats what its called. i pretty much go to plead innocent or guilty again, then come back another day. wish me luck!

Yes!! run 93! the 103 might help you a little. You could advance the timing a tad too. B16s have knock sensors and knock sensors get pissed when 87 is used. that means retardation.

Ben

Like Ben said, race gas can only help you if you advance your timing, otherwise, don’t bother with anything over 93.

 thanks guys. i actually am getting my timing set today. i’ve taken the distrubutor off so many times i know its off since i dont have a timing light. i just marked the top of it and lined it back up but i doubt its right. i’ll just have it set at 18 deg. and run the usual 93.
thanks again for all the help

well i went again lastnight and ran a 10.7  i think my second run would have been better but i missed 3rd and still got 11 flat.
shootin for a 10.5 next time

i think you just need to get the hang of it more. last year when i had a cai and 2 1/2 catback i ran 10.3 consistently on falken azenis and bad negative camber. that’s in an ls of course, launching at about 2500.

John, we need to talk. I want to know what you’re doing different with your launches than me because as you know I couldn’t get a decent launch on that track to save my life.
