Flywheel option

Im taking a transmisson class starting next week and i plan on changing my clutch and maybe flywheel. I plan eventually getting a mild turbo setup and was
wondering if there are any lightweight flywheels that would work well with a turbo setup. I heard if you go too light is bad and most ive been able to find are 8lbs.

i like the clutchmaster flywheels. there 8lbs and work and look great… they also have replaceable friction material so when u change ur clutch u dont have to change the flywheel just get new contact material… i have in my 91 ls na. and love it…

im not exactly to sure, but i think most people run there stock heavy ones because the light weight ones cant handle the boost or something like that or itll rev to fast. just search. anybody else’s opinion from experience???

I’ve been using my ACT prolight flywheel for a few years now with no issues at all.

I haven’t heard of too many stories about flywheels breaking under alot of power, but with only 8lbs boost, I wouldn’t worry about it.

Some other brands to look into
TODA
Spoon
Fidanza

its useless to run a lightened flywheel with turbo cause once you hit boost it will break the tires and you’ll loose traction, aside from letting the motor rev too quickly. all my friends running turbo use a stock flywheel

If you gotta have a lighter flywheel, get a type R one off a G3. they’re like 12 or 13lbs (ours is 18lbs) & they fit right on. :burnout: :manual:

actually i think ours are closer to 20 pounds… but dont quote me on that…

How about a gsr flywheel? And g3 flywheels are a direct fit?

Okay i was just on advance auto parts website and i can get a reman type r flywheel for $35 after core charge. Will this bolt right up to my tranny?

Advanceauto might not be a good idea, if you ever to decide on boosting your car later on… I haven’t bought any flwheels from them so I don’t know, I went with the exedy 9.5 lb. flywheel…just my 2cents

Ok ill take that into consideration, are g3 flywheels a direct fit?

i just replaced mine with a 97 itr one the stock one weighed in at 19.8 pounds and the itr one is 16 even

:burnout: :manual: Should be a direct fit, yeah.

txracer did you notice any difference from the itr flywheel?

not right off the bat, but after the last week or so it just feels to pick up faster when i floor it. im only about half way into my break in. so this is all from crusing at 3.5k in 2nd,3rd. then flooring it. no popping the clutch or hard shifting. just know that its not a dramatic change. and that the next time my transmission has to come off. im going to put in a act streetlite flywheel.but all in all im happy with it. just cant wait for the break in to be over with…

after being able to red line my car now, i can say that i didnt see a difference in how fast the rpms got ran through. but from watching the speedo, i can say that i see a improvment in how fast the mph climbs. 4th gear feels alot better. i did a one gear pull today against what seemed to be a crappy droped dc ls with a fart can muffler on it. rolling start at 4k only went to redline. i had quickly pulled almost a full car length on him. then i stop and went back to the speed limit… the itr flywheel was well worth it if your on a budget but if you got the extra $$ to spare go with the act 12lb.

I wanna get the fidanza flywheel it is 7.5 pounds my goal is to go all motor but i am tryin to reach my car to 170-200 whp but if i get that flywheel right now and my car is bone stock other then intake will that have any effect for the 1/4 mile?

I am running the 7.5 lb Fidanza and love it. I only have I, H, E, resonated test pipe, and a stage one clutch on a 301K mile engine. I won’t drag race until all my parts are saved up for the rebuild. But once you find the sweet spot between throttle and clutch feathering, you should have no poblem at the strip, and let us know if you shave a tenth off your time.
