This applies to owners of VTEC OBD-I ECUs that have opened their ECU case and have some electronics background.
Please refer to the following pic of my P61 stock ECU:
Does anyone who’s peaked at their VTEC ECUs have the stock EPROM in place? Do you have a resistor in junction J1 as well? Is your ECU chipped or not?
I’ve been emailing Katman back and forth but he’s extremly slow to reply (probably busy as I can no doubt understand) and I’m wondering about a certain technique that would allow me to switch back to stock program if I undid J1. However, since I have a stock EPROM on board, along with J1 and the CMOS latching chip, I am concerned that I may not be able to perform this trick as easily as those that do not have these components present already on their stock VTEC ECUs.
I was wondering what ECUs specifically don’t have the stock EPROMs on them besides the P72 and/or if any of you have noticed any other ECUs without them on the board.
Thank you kindly in advance if any of you have any insight in the matter.

P.S. Dan: Did Johnny’s ECU have the above components on his P72 when you did his? Thanks bud!
P.S.S. brekekex: What do you charge for the components if I were to obtain them from you instead and if you offer them?
Bizarre. That’s the first P61 ECU I’ve seen opened. But I doubt it’s that different. Let me talk with a friend of mine and I’ll get back to you. Johnny’s and my ECU didn’t have them in place. They had to be added. Yours almost looks like it has already been chipped. But I could be wrong.
Damn, I have a P61 ECU and I just got it chipped. I dont have a resistor in J1 but there is a wire soldered in there. Is the EPROM the orange colored chip in the picture??? If so, I have that in place. The chip is sitting on a IC holder or seat.
I have everything in that picture, the only difference is whats in J1 and a different chip in place of the orange one in the picture.
Sorry, I dont know what it looked like before.
btw, my ecu was done by Yoshio of Japanese Automotive.
Dan, thanks again - I look forward to hearing your findings whenever you hear of anything from your friend.
Crazy DA, yes, that chip with the orange part covering the window of the chip is the EPROM. I’m not supposed to have that chip. My ECU is supposed to be like yours, but I’m thinking that perhaps they were made by different manufacturers (one Denshigiken, the other IPT). I’m still hoping this will work out for me. I know for sure I can chip my ECU, I just wish mine was like yours where those components were added, not replaced.
Who is Yoshio of Japanese Automotive? Are they local and if so, where? And how much did he/they charge you?
