I’m in the process of changing my timing belt and can not get the damn crank pulley bolt off. I am using a heavy-duty Porter Cable 6hp 25-gallon vertical compressor and a 600 ft/lb Ingersol Rand 1/2" twin-hammer impact wrench and the bolt doesn’t budge. I have used this setup for a a while now and have never come across a nut/bolt that it couldn’t loosen, until now. I even tried the 4’ breaker bar without success, although I don’t think it’s more powerful than my impact.
My question is how much effect does heating up the bolt have on helping to loosen it. After doing a search on the subject, I plan on buying a propane torch today and giving that a try. I really don’t want to put everything back together and drive to a mechanic.
Although I don’t have a problem with the crank turning, I wonder if there’s any place in Austin that rents out a crank pulley holder tool similar to the Moroso one.
Thanks for listening to me gripe. I am so pissed right now:mad:. Any input is much appreciated.
unfortunately… if you haven’t touched the bolt for a long time, it could be pretty dang tough to get off… many times it’s the toughest part of the timing belt install.
When i did mine awhile back, Dan couldn’t get it off w/ his impact wrench… but luckily his neighbor works accross the street at Les Scwhab… he let us use the house air, and that thing came off in literally 1 second.
Yup, a good impact wrench, 19mm impact socket, 3/4" air line, and a good compresssor will pop that bolt off in a heartbeat. I just upgraded my lines in my garage to 3/4". WOOOHOOO!!!

nice dan! how’s the whole Business Lisence thing commin’ along?
Well, ran into some “issues”. I have to find a shop to lease, which I’ve already started doing. The license is not a problem. It’s city zoning. Grrrrrr.

oh so they won’t let you run an automotive shop in your residential garage or something?
man… if you have to lease a shop, that’ll eat into your profits… BUT… it will definitely attract more people the more professional your shop looks good luck bro…
had the same problem with mine using 1/2" impact at high pressure.
used acetylene torch to heat the washer behind the bolt RED HOT and then the bolt turned. the reason I had to heat the washer is that if you just heat the bolt, it only gets the head of the bolt red hot, and doesn’t go far enough back to do any good. If you heat the washer, the heat works its way further back.

that is some beefy air. now i dont feel so bad none of the guns i got worked either. torch it is… now who will let me play with one… archivethis
Thanks for the helps guys. This is an old post and I got the bolt off the same week I first posted. After locking the flywheel with a flywheel holder I MacGyvered, I torched the bolt for about 15 min and then used my 3’ breaker bar with an additional 2’ of piping and finally got it off. I don’t know how much help the torch did, but I ended up melting some of the plastic of the lower timing belt cover. I wouldn’t recommend the torch method for that reason.
i took the starter out, jammed up the flywheel, had someone stepon the brakes, and seriously went to town on that thing for like 3 hours…soon as i was going to give up, one more try…then snap, the b1tch broke loose, it must be a miracle
u just have to be an animal with it
or, there is a tool, u see the nut behind the bolt, hondas tool turns that clockwise while turning the bolt, counterclockwise
ive never seen it but i know its out there
