Yesterday I drove the car in the Dallas city area for 4 hours with the weather at 90-95 degrees. I made a pitstop and to my dismay the temp. gauge rose a little and crossed the 50/50 mark but didn’t reach all the way to critical. I switched off the car immediately and checked coolant level, which was normal. I then did a preliminary check for leaks, cooling fan, busted radiator, hissing noises, smoke, hoses, anything out of the ordinary and I found nothing. The car is 12 years old, 162K miles, very well maintained and abused twice a week on the street, if you know what I mean. BTW this is the first time something like this has happened and due to my paranoid character I haven’t even started the car for the past 24 hours. What to do???
Hey bud… My 3rd gen Integra did this same type thing… it only did it twice in the year I owned it… only thing I could think of was a sticking thermostat but I never checked it out… you might want to look into a thermostat that is sticking closed…
Yeah, that sounds like the thermostat stuck for a sec. Nothing to worry about, but something you should look into replacing sometime soon.
Dont worry about the temp gauge until it gets into, or close to, the red.
Just drive it like normal and get that thermostat replaced.
Later,

You cannot trust a Honda temp gauage… it runs like this (for example, not accurate my Helms is out in the car… I have been reading it at work):
If the temp is below 150degrees the output voltage is 1.2Volts… he voltage stays like this until it hits about 220 then it drops the voltage down to .7 volts… the gauge in the car really only has 3 spots… cold… normal… hot… if you want something accurate, you have to install one…
