Part of my car got painted from break-in damage… and I know I am not supposed to wax or polish it for like 3 months… I accept this, I’m just wondering what the theory behind it is. What will happen if I do wax it? Wax doesn’t seem harmful, polish prob isn’t the best thing… does it take 3 months for the paint to cure and attach to the car?.. just wonderin…
Is that what the body shop told you? My brother works at a body shop and he wetsands and buffs/polishes and then waxes them the day after or sometimes right out of the paint booth. but it depends on the paint system. the theory behind this is you are supposed to let the paint harden all of the way before you start rubbing on it b/c if paint isn’t hard and you start waxing it can get gummy and it will look like shiot. just my $0.02
I’m not a pro paint know it all guy, but the reason is that the paint has to be set. Meaning like its still too fresh to do anything to it, it has to cure. Wax, polish, and color sanding, you have to wait atleast 1 month to do so. BUT, this what the shop did to my bro’s car (after wetsanding it, the car is still very smooth till today and with no problems). I have no idea why your shop said 3 months, I think 3 months is awfully a lot of time but maybe the weather is also a factor when you could polish your ride. I am just speaking from my experience.
yeah the cold weather could have something to do with it. it takes a lot longer for paint to cure in the cold than it does in the warm baking heat of the summer
i work at a PPG dealer… they say ONE month! im looking at their brochure as i type this…![]()
heres what my body shop told me after painting my front kit and sides. don’t wax the new painted parts for at least 45 days. the reason behind this is that the new paint needs to “breath” and cure. when you wax it, it covers up the paint and won’t allow it to breath and cure properly, this will cause the paint to crack. they said it was ok to wash the car though.

yeah… this is my logic behind it, thanks… think i’ll just wait 45 days rather than 3 months… so that makes 15 more days:p
all i know is… I didn’t know about this… the guy DIDN’T tell me and i have no experience w/ new paint… i got my bumpers repainted…
and i washed my car, the next day, yadda yadda… and it left marks… like swirl marks, etc.
just be safe and don’t wash it for a while.
