Front Suspension

My steering wheel has a lot of play. I have 220k (Kilometers) on my 93 teg.
I have been told to change the tie rods. I am also replacing the whole left drive axle as my left CV boot closer the wheel is busted(for at least 2 weeks now). I got all the parts from Murray’s Discount, tie rods about US $26 each and drive axle about $80. I think the brand it TRW.

Any advice from the experts would be appreciated???

Play in the steering wheel

I changed my left side drive axle last nite. After all, it was not that hard. The CV boot was broken.

I was going to change the tie rods to fix the steering wheel play but my friend told me that tie rods were fine. With the car on the lift and wheels off, he shaked the rotors and there seemed to be no play in the existing tie rods. However, I noticed the wheels had a bit of play and it was in the rod that ties to the tie rods.
I was told it was the joint at the end of the seeting shaft(I don’t know what it is called may be rack and pinion???).

Has anyone had this kind of problem in the past?
What did u do to fix it?

The play in the steering wheel is only a few degrees each side. I am also told to fix the steering wheel play before I get an alignment. Is this right?

93 RS with 130K miles

I think i have similar play in the steering. Like when the car is lifted you can move the whole wheel back and forth like 1/2" but both wheel move. I’m not really sure what it is, possibly in the rack. I said screw it because the rack and pinion is EXTREMELY complicated from what i saw in my shop manual.
