fuel filter no start

ok today i tried starting my 90 ls coupe and i didnt hear the pump prime? well if that is what it is when you turn the key to the on position and hear like the fuel going thur the lines. well as stated when i hear that i turn the key and car always starts on first try. but didnt hear it today and car wont start. i give it gas as i turn the key , it turns on then dies. hoping its the fuel filter and not the fuel pump but if anyone has had this problem please let me know what it could be. thanks, also the car has 180,xxx miles so fuel filter may need a change reguardless.

Sounds like the Main Fuel Relay under the dash, it’s a common problem with our cars. Searching should reveal countless threads on how to fix it, so have a look. Good luck!

Also make sure you have the fuel lines on the filter correct. Some filters only flow one way and have arrows that point the direction of the fuel thru them. Make sure the line from the firewall goes on the IN side of the filter and the OUT goes on the line to the fuel rail.
It is very easy to get them mixed up.

so if it is the main fuel relay should i replace it with a oem one ? or is it a soldering thing i can do? is there a way to make sure it is the relay? if i got it diagnose on the computer will it pop up as a code. and yes the fuel filter i picked up does have the inlet outlet arrows. and also i did get the car to start tonight and ran fine i’ll see if it starts 2marrow. so could it still be the relay if it starts sometimes just not all the time? thanks for the advice guys.

If you know how to properly solder then I would recommend re soldering your old relay. No more spontaneous no starts for about 2 years now since I did mine. It is the one problem just about everyone in the Honda arena deals with one time or another.

ya i will see if i can find some one to solder it, i was in the process of changing out the fuel filter but the dam bolts are tight and i am afraid of stripping that shit… also the inlet/outlet arrows of the fuel filter i bought seem to be upside down. the factory filter has the fuel rail line with the coming out arrow and the one going to the firewall has the coming in i believe . well if it helps the filter i bought was a wix , if anyone has used one they may know what im talking about.

If you do not hear the fuel pump priming it is most likely the PGM-FI Main Relay, as mentioned, a common problem… http://techauto.awardspace.com/mainrelay.html 94

well i cleaned the fuel relay as stated in another post that i read on hear. anywayz i plugged it back in and started on first try. let in warm up and the idle start to go up and down every 3-5 sec . then i started smelling plastic burning couldnt find out were it was coming frm. hopefully the relay isnt burning lol but i did notice the relay had some bad solder points so 2marrow ima see if it starts if not im gonna either buy a new one or try and find someone who knows how to solder. i know its a old car but i wouldnt mind putting cash in her to make sure she last me another 3-4yrs

get a voltmeter and check resistance at the coil side of the relay

well i changed out the main relay and the car started right up. now ima see if it turns on 2marrow with no issues. also i noticed my air filter was dirty and i dont think it is the washable one’s. has anyone use any k&n filters ? drop in’s or cai. i seen a K&n filter called the " fipk " i guess it is there proformance line, is it worth the 100 bucks or so that it cost? any experience between the 2 would help .

i have a k&n filter works good and there rewashable which is good…its also makes the engine sounds nicer on the higher rpms
