Just changed my distributor, set the timing - everything running great - the next day - start the car (in very hot weather) and the gas gauge rises to full.
I know I only have half a tank! I wish this were true - I’d love to drive this car forever if it magically fills the tank
Next day, start the car - fuel gauge goes back to half. Later in the day it is back to full. I did do some searching on this subject, but have not found too much info about how this gauge works. It seems there’s a signal sender in the gas tank under the rear seat that sends a signal to the fuel gauge.
I seem to have an intermittent problem where it can’t decide if it’s full or half full.
Any idea of how to troubleshoot? I’ve had the cluster gauge off a few times in the last few years to change the speedo cable, fix the heating controls but now this…
If I unplug the gauge - does it tell me anything? Anyone experience this sort of problem? What was the fix?
TIA,
Graham
i believe the pressure in the tank affects it. i notice when im driving i have so much gas but when i park and come out the next morning its lower than it was.
what happens if you are below half tank? do you know if your tank is full or not?
I bought a JDM cluster for my EG8 two years ago and when I installed it, the same thing happened, the fuel gauge rose right to the top and it just stayed there. One day I got adventurous and I pulled off the back seat and fiddled around with the connections on the top of the gas tank and when I started up the car, it instantly went down to the proper level and worked perfectly after that.
My suggestion is to start there as a first step. Check your connections under the back seat on top of the gas tank for the fuel level sending unit (I think that’s what it’s called) and then if after making sure the connections are good, check if you have any signal coming from it at all.
Hope this helps for you man, good luck to ya!
OK thanks for the tips. I did just vacuum the back seat the other day - maybe I squished some wires?
I just filled the tank full to see if it would make any diffference.
Once I use more gas, time will tell.
I did a bunch more searching (googling) and found out more info for troubleshooting this sort of problem. It seems going to the F is better than staying at E - otherwise the general consensis is to replace your cluster gauge. As the gas level goes up & down the resistance changes on the sender unit in the tank. I’ll have to get out my multimeter methinks…
Also, I always reset the trip odometer when filling the tank - a habit I’ve had for years - this way I’m not totally in the dark with how much gas is in the tank - but I would like to get it working again…

Hehe, I started resetting the trip meter in my EG when the gauge wasn’t work and I’ve carried it over ever since I do it to log L/KM, but I hear you about getting the gauge to work instead of resetting the trip meter.
Definitely check if you squished a wire out of place or something of the like. And yes if the gauge itself is pooched then you’ll be getting no signal with it, although when I asked my mechanic about it when mine was going wonkey, he said that if it wasn’t the connection on top of the tank, then it’s generally something in between the cluster itself and the sending unit that’s causing problems. Mine turned out to be a loose connection, hopefully that’s all that’s wrong with yours too.
Good luck to you man!
