My fuel pump keeps going out, It is not anything obvious like the relay or a bad wire. The car was getting hard to start before this pump went but it ran fine once started, and the car cut in and out while going 75 mph on the hottest day of the year 105F if not hotter.Well needless to say I want to eliminate this problem, so where should I start looking to find the cause there are no externally obvious problems like kinked lines or broken wires and I have searched although I have not read every post I have read most also I have worked on all my cars I have owned over the last 24 yrs and I am pretty good at diagnosis but this one has me stumped .
This pump was replaced may 3rd 2011 At that time I reversed the fuel lines by mistake (I do not know how I did that!! i was very upset at that time)and I had a post about that please help with any and all thoughts on this problem. also the car is completely stock
Excessive resistance on the power or ground side will cause a fuel pump to work harder.
Best way to check this is to perform a voltage drop on the (+) side and the (-) side.
If you have more than a few tenths of a volt then you will need to check for a poor
connection or corrosion.
Kinked fuel lines or a resitricted fuel filter will do the same.
Have you checked fuel presssure?
Last but not least contaminted fuel could also be a killer to a fuel pump.
Good luck!
thanks for the ideas now off to find the bad wires lol what fun. I will post back when i find out what it is
Looks like it was a bad battery cable NEVER would I have thought that the cable that looked in good shape would make that much difference the car idles better and brighter lights also!!! Thanks for the idea ALLmans ,it got me reading on cables and that is what it was — LAST place i would have looked— now i have to rebuild the starter I burnt cranking for so long hope it is easier than the fuel pump lol
