Fuel starvation @ track, autocross

Is anyone having bogging, or flat out stalling at autocrosses or on track? My car has had a plaguing problem of dying during hard left turns. Happened at Mid Ohio, and at 4 autocrosses. Only left turns, high g’s, high revs.

I’m thinking fuel starvation, especially after running an “experiment” today: car died with 1/4 tank, but not with a full tank. Has anyone experienced something similar? Do you simply always keep the tank full?

Also, does anyone know what side the pickup is on the gas tank (from the front)? Typically Hondas starve in right handers which makes my problem somewhat unique.

Comments, suggestions?

Thanks

I’ve had that problem on a road course once. When I got off the course, the fuel gauge showed slightly under a quarter tank.
I’ve also noticed at autocrosses that the fuel gauge drops almost a quarter tank while out on course. There have been several occasions when I’m out on course and the fuel light comes on(I haven’t had any bogging as of yet though :knocks on wood: )Then once I get back to the staging area, it climbs back up again. Normally for autox, I fill the tank to about half before going to the event. That’s also how much gas I had in the car when it was corner weighed. For track days, I fill it up and go from there.

I think you are having a loss in fuel pressure

that is my guess since you said
“car died with 1/4 tank, but not with a full tank.”

so maybe the fuel pump is on its last leg

Nino: did it bog when turning in both directions?

I am currently dropping the tank as I type, so I can check out the pump itself.

This happened a while ago, but if I remember right, it happened during a long right turn. This was the second turn on the course(Willow Springs) and after it happened, I started slowing down to cool down the car a little bit before bringing it in. Also, I was afraid that it would bog again. The car didn’t bog again, but I wasn’t going that fast.

I have it below 1/2 tank in the civic. Freaked me out the first time it happened. Mine doesnt die, just loses power and bucks a little.

It’s been suggested to me that I buy a fuel pressure gauge, hook it up at the fuel filter and make the car die. If there’s no pressure then the tank/pump is most likely to blame, if there is pressure, it may be an ignition issue.

Not a bad idea really.

I’m putting off dropping the tank til I have more time and replacement bolts.

I think my pump is on its last leg.

Also, is the pickup in the middle of the tank?

the fuel pump (im guessing the pickup too) is on the rear drivers side of the tank

Thanks!

So during left handed turns, the fuel sloshes to the right (passenger side) and away from the pickup. Makes sense to me.

mine bucks and bogs violently when im at less than 1/16th tank or say around 3 gallons left while turning right.
