Is there anything complicated with installing a new gas tank on 92 GS, or is it pretty much bolt on? Any help would be apprectiated.
should be very straight forward. Remove the fuel pump Under the rear seat. You will have to remove the rear drivers tire and splash guard to get access to the fill pipe and vent line. remove the nuts in the gas fill area. It would be a good idea to run your car out of gas or get it as low as you possibly can. You will have to drain the remaining gas from the tank by removing the drain plug. leave the gas cap off to let the fuel vapors escape. Remember that fuel vapor is highly explosive something as small as static electricity can ignight it. Be sure to remove the ground wire from the battery before you start. Do the job in a well ventalated area. You might have to remove the rear drivers side lower tie bar to drop the tank due to the fill and vent pipe. Good luck and be safe.
I had to do this a while ago to weld in a new rear-suspension cross memeber. It was a PITA… The hoses didn’t want to come down off too well, but it can accomplished.
it is pretty straightforward, except you have to take out the back seat, but not to remove the pump (you can’t get to the pump without dropping the tank). You remove the back seat to disconnect the power to the pump and sender, and you’ll also have to slip the connector out of the plate that holds it and push it down on top of the tank, so that you can actually drop the tank (this will make more sense when you see it) Then just get under the car and drain the tank, then remove the splash guard around the hoses and remove the hoses. Then just undo the straps supporting the tank and it should just drop down. I’d replace all the fuel hoses and clamps while you’re at it (except the fuel fill hose, as it’s a special part you need from acura). Then just swap the fuel pump and sender units and the valve thing from your tank into the new tank, and install everything. It shouldn’t be too hard. Took me about a day to complete. Just be careful with the red valve on the top of the tank, as it’s pretty flimsy plastic, and when removing hoses I broke mine, so I had to replace it, which was about $45 from acura and took a few days to get. Good luck! I’d do all this outdoors if possible because of the gas fumes, even outdoors it was pretty bad for me.
Oh, also, to help get the hoses off, use some pliers to twist them a bit to break the seal first, then pull them off. None of mine were too difficult to get off. The hardest one was the fuel fill one, but I dropped the tank a bit and managed to pull it off. It also helps to have an assortment of oddly shaped pliers to grab hoses. Good luck!
thanks a lot guys i just finished it last night. It was pretty straight forward. I had to replace it because while installing my stereo i accidently put a hole in the tank even though i was trying my hardest not to. I was just wondering whether or not i could do it myself as I am not much of a mechanic.
