gauge running hot 3/4 of the way to red

I just bought a db1 that has been sitting since may last night. When i turned the key to th ON position i noticed the temp gauge move up halfway. no biggie. Now when i drove it home the gauge showed it was running hot 3/4 of the way to red. But when i popped the hood everything seemed normal. Its a 91 gs and all the fans came on. I think its the sensor with the nipple on the head. If anyone else has encountered this problem please chime in.

bump whoever changed the thread title please answer the question lol

You got the right idea. There is a possibility the gauge is going bad but personally I would change the sensor first since its cheap and easier to replace than the gauge.

Just a thought it could possibly be the thermostat I had the same problem with my 91 LS. But to be absolutely sure I would invest in a manual for your car it will brake down all the possibilities and diagnos the problem. Dont be like me and run your car with a heating issue save your self the money and the time by doing it right the first time.

you didn’t mention if you check the coolant level in your radiator. have you check that yet? or flush the coolant? just a thought.

Just a thought but when I did my swap I put in a cheesey Autozone thermostat and it was going up 3/4. So I got own Honda and not it never goes past half

the car was sitting overnight. when he turned the key to the on position, the gauge went up halfway. if it were sitting overnight, the gauge shouldn’t have gone up immediately like that.
i’d bet on the temp sending unit being hooped. it’s probably showing halfway higher on the gauge than it should. temp is probably actually 3/4 to the red. you can fire the temp gun at it and see what it says when the gauge is reading 1/4 to red
