Hey guys, I had to give my 91 LS project to my lil bro so he could have something to drive at college. It has the orignal motor with like 230k on it and we are wanting to beef it up. I would like to hear yalls suggestions on a general rebuild for a solid daily driver as an outcome. Of course money is a limiting factor so I am looking to only do what needs be done to bring the power plant and drivetrain back to good health. Any help and/or suggestions are greatly appreciated!
i did a mini rebuild to my original engine ,when i first got my car it had 170k miles and it was pretty worn out but it ran and didnt knock or anything only burnt a ton of oil …i mean a ton of oil like if i filled up the oil and the gas at the same time i would need oil before i needed gas again
so what i did was compression and leakdown test to determine that it needed piston rings
i decided to do an in the car rebuild
i pulled the head off and lapped the valves to seal them back up
while the head was off i pulled the pistons honed the cylinders and replaced the piston rings and rod bearings
did not have to mess with the mains
the only other things i replaced were timing belt and water pump and a few random gaskets
and i can tell you it worked out great and the car had a ton more power just being fresh and having good compression
if you did a rebuild with a set of b16 or type r pistons and a set of cams i know it would wake it up nicely but then you also need some kind of tuning …so you need to decide how much you want to spend and how fast you want to go
