got a b16 for free....

well i got a b16 for dirt … only thing is i need some advice as to which one i have hahahhaa… im not much into engine swaps (as of now :D) so i may or may not even use this motor…

does anyone have a lil time to check out some pics of it n tell me what version it is and if its worth putting in my 92gs???

the head,intake & throttle body are all together and the the block itself is on the engine stand…

i can take any kind of pics you need to see … thanks…

no matter which gen b16a it is… definitely put it in. (after you make sure it’s in good working order)

in terms of the engine… you could probably just look at the block and see what it says on the front identification plate.

b16a1 or b16a2 (most likely a1). is there a bar code there as well w/ your tranny name? y1, ys1, s1, etc?

aparently what i have is:

jdm b16a on block
alternator, water pump, &ac unit/power steering?

pr3-2 on head
valve cover says,top~ large letters= DOHC… small letters=vtec
bottom~ “H”… honda motor co.

pgm-fi on the intake manifold
stock throttle body
was told it to have .20~.30 over pistons
crankshaft endcaps have been orange siliconed back together…
was told to have balanced crankshaft
ported n polished head (by himself,with a dremel at best:bored:)
balanced clutch (orange press. plate?), stock flywheel,
no tranny
no ecu
no axle’s
no shift linkage

i have a 92gs,

what about passing smog? (i live in california) :bored:

…the only thing that’s sketchy is the “self dremel port and polish” … is he just some “dude” or does he know what he’s doing :confused:

well he’s probly is pretty good… but its not 100% ya know… if i use it ill most likey get it redone anyways… jus cause im an picky mofo …

can i use the stock ecu? tranny? axles?

Well… since you live in the wonderful Golden State, the chances of you getting that guy smogged legally are really slim. JDM motors of any kind are not legal anymore in California.

Anywhoo, if you want to get this guy going, you’re going to need an OBD1 PR3 ECU, chipped P28 ECU, P30 ECU, or P61 ecu. I’d also suggest looking for a VTEC cable tranny. B16’s on LS trannies are dogs. That’s pretty much all you’re going to need.

hey what about a vtec controller thingy i always hear about??? will i need that? or will the chipped ecu handle that?

The ECU will control the Vtec. The Vtc Controller is an aftermarket part made to change the point at which vtec engages. Its not necessary for a vtec engine, however it is a pretty nifty toy. :smiley:

well as of now i might wanna trade the worked b16 block for a b18 … or some other parts i want… i dunno i still have to break it down and find out what kind of pistons and rods they are… since it has been already bored over… w/flat top pistons.

How to check an engine before you’d buy?

I found a b16a1 with ecu/tranny/distrib. all the goods, and said it has 40-50K miles on the engine for $1500, I was thinking how can u figure if the engines good? sure it only has 40-50K miles, but what if the previous owner didnt change oil, ran low on oil, and burned stuff up or whatever? I am kinda iffy still on doing a swap, but the vtec, more hp engine with such low miles is starting to sound better and better…and I gotta get this swap so i can have a dang 5spd, I was gonna debate turbo, but im to poor for that. Any tips?

best bet is to get the compression tested…

or if your up for it buy it and tear it down…

found out the engine has JE/SRP pistons +.020 dish top pistons @ 8.5:1 compression
new from JE they run $489.00 including ring set.

EAGLE/ARP Forged 4340 chromoly steel rods
ARP2000/Eagle 1.5 rod bolts
rods will handle over 750hp
new from Eagle they run $396.00

crank has been balanced.

the engine has 0 miles on it.

i say sell it to somwone who’s planning to go turbo and buy a b20

yeah daver thats what i wanna do, except the buying of the b20… im in DESPERATE need of money to pay a collections agancy that suspended my licence…

do you think 1000,00 is asking too much? concidering the upgraded internals…
