Got a 91 gs b18a1 stock motor, intake at .oo5 exaust .oo6(older car). Car sounds great. The problem is now when i accelarate the car does this puff puff stumbles and then it goes. Never had that problem please any help would be great. ( thinking is the timing). Thanks
are you sure a tooth on the cam didnt skip. deffinatly sounds like a timing issue.
It might have the cam (exaust side) looks like it did would that affect it and how would i get it fixed thanks
Did you perform the adjustment? What other work was done as well as the adjustment? I only ask because the belt wouldn’t have had to be loosened for only an adjustment. In fact if the valves were adjusted while a cam was not the proper timing, the clearances may not be right. Read what I have posted below and make sure all you marks line up, then check all the valve clearances and make sure they are spot on AFTER you tighten the set nut. These engines can be real finicky with improper valve clearances. Good Luck.
With the valve cover off, and the arrows on the cam gears pointing UP, there is a hole in the nearest cam cap to lock each cam at cyl#1 TDC. You can find a proper sized bolt in a pinch but I would use a pair proper size punches. Then make sure your crank is a cyl#1 TDC by lining up the single white mark (not to be confused with the three different colored timing light marks) on the crank pulley with the alignment sight on the lower timing cover (or the post sticking out of your oil pump if the lower cover is MIA). Tighten the belt up, remove the pins from the cams and turn the motor over a whole cycle (cyls 1-4 counter clock wise of course =) from the crank pulley with a wrench (this will be easiest with the spark plugs removed) till you are back at #1 TDC. If all is well your arrows will be pointing UP and your crank alignment mark will be right on.
U know it did not do dat before the adjustment. So now i changed the rotor and the cap. Car runs better. But still stumbles on low rpm’s most is first and second. Great in the freeway. Next is the wires and plugs. Thanks for the help. Oh yea and the timing.
This happen to me once, did an adjustment and it stumbled/died sumtimes… Ended up bein the adjustment was just a lil to tight. Just throwin in my 2cents
Update after trial and error.
- Valve adjustment ( .001 lower than spec. Both intake.exaust), new valve cover gasket and spark plug seals.
- New spark plugs (ngk copper, gap 43-44)
- New wire set (bosch)
- New cap and rotor
- New vacumm lines
- New pcv valve
- Timing and idle adjusted
- Before installing: Sea foam (vacumm line), changed spark plugs, seafoam again…
- Changed oil (k&n filter)
the car is running like she has never ran before. Went from being a 6 to 8.5. On my scale cause needs suspension etc. But engine wise she is sounds quiet, strong, and no more stumble or stutter or anything like dat. Enjoyable to drive again. Thanks for all the help…
Glad to hear, valve clearance is critical. Enjoy that gen2! :manual:
