i have just recently noticed that as i’m driving if i shift from second to third when above 3k rpms then it grinds weather it be slightly or vigorously. i just got a clutch replaced on it about 5,000 miles ago. any ideas of how i can fix this or know what the problem is.
Synchros are probably going bad. You can try using GM Synchromesh Friction Modified I used it and it helped.Do you have a cable or hydro tranny?
that could be the problem. maybe change your fluid or check the level of it
i had the same problem after 4500rpms and put some honda mtf in it drove it normal for like a week then it worked for me.
its a cable 5speed. and how would i check the fluid level there is no dipstick like auto. and i don’t know how to put any thing in the trany??? noob at this. first car but looove it…
If you look from the passenger side wheel well, you will see the drain plug and fill bolt. When you remove the fill bolt, fluid should slowly come out, if not, put your finger in and see how low below the hole the fluid is. You might want to go ahead and drain all the oil out and refill with 2.4 quarts of Honda MTF. Honda MTF got rid of my grinds to, and I am at 304K miles on the original tranny.
Also, adjust your clutch via the clutch cable adjustment to factory specs. You can do a search and see how, or basically, you want the clutch pedal to have 3/4 of an inch of free play up top and you want the clutch to grab about halfway up on the clutch pedal travel.
3rd gear grind is classic in the ls tranny. Both of mine did that (before B16 transplant). The synchros are known to go bad. Try that GM synchromesh as others have mentioned. Should have nothing to do with your clutch, its all tranny.
Actually, if the clutch isn’t adjusted properly, the flywheel stays engaged to the clutch disk while you are trying to shift. This can cause grinds because the gear shafts never get a chance to syncronize their speeds. Since he just changed the clutch, the cable adjustment might be necessary, that’s the only reason I mentioned it.
thanks for the help, i’m goin to try the gm syncromesh, where can i get this stuff around.
I got mine from the local GM Dealer.Make sure you get the Friction Modified approx $13 a qt been a while since I bought it but that is what I paid the last time.Im using Honda MTF now.
synchromesh = bueno!
