Grinding 3rd gear, Y?

ok, before i did my swap, my stock motor had a bad lifter(s), bad tranny, and 190,000 miles on the odomter, at this point every gear except 5th was grinding. So i knew it was time for a new heart. So i finally did my jdm b16 swap. Motor, tranny and everything else new clutch etc… Now i noticed its doing it again, but this time only 3rd gear and its only when at a high rpm, every other gear is fine. The only thing i could think of is maybe my gearbox needs a little tlc, cuz i noticed when i got the car it looked like the previous owner(s) never did any kind of maintenence on the car. So any help from u guys would be greatly appreciated.

You can try changing the fluid in the tranny. But usually if it grinds the synchro is worn and not able to do its job properly. You might as a last ditch effort is try some GM synchromesh fluid. You may also want to make sure your clutch cable is adjusted properly, and that you are fully engaging the clutch before shifting.

yeah definately try the synchromesh. But you can also double clutch to avoid it. Or what I did before I did my swap was when I was shifting into third I would put it into 4th and then 3rd without letting the clutch up until it was in 3rd. I think it slows down the synchros so they dont grind. It suck though I know I drove mine for 2 years like that. Racing it sucked cuz sometimes i would miss the shift into 3rd and rev the Sh*t out of the engine.

Cheers! :blah:

my accord does this, its because the axle seals are leaking and just enough fluid leaks out so 3rd gear isn’t fully lubricated and grinds, usually at higher rpms. check your seals and the fluid level. it should be level with the fill bolt hole. i’ve always just added honda mtf and the grind goes away.

Rebuild your trans. If its grinding your synchros are shot. I just finished rebuilding mine and it shifts so nicely now. Its nice to be able to rip on it without grinding.

Yeah I had to rebuild my transmission. You can try changing the fluid to GM Synchromesh as others suggest, though I’m skeptical of it actually being able to fix grinds. Regardless, it’s a lot cheaper to just try some new transmission fluid than rip apart the entire transmission.
