Since the kids are on spring break, I decided to take them to Universal Studios yesterday. I was cruising in the carpool lane on the 210 when traffic came to an abrupt stop. I hear screeching brakes, then feel a jolt and hear a pop at the same time. In the corner of my eye, I see a black small car fly by my passenger side. I recollect my thoughts, kids are okay, and look up in the rear view and see older ford truck about 15 feet away. It couldn’t have been the truck. I swore there was a black cr-z behind me earlier. I was stuck behind a suv, as they moved, I safely cross the double yellows and the hunt began. Due to the traffic jam, the cr-z was only about 200 feet way. Slowly I make may way up to him and am on the line 911 about to read the plates, just in case this guy makes a run for it. He eventually pulls over the right shoulder of the 210. It was dangerous there, so I told him to get off the next exit and we ended up in front of Monrovia Nissan.
He gets out and apologizes. He states his insurance has expired and he would like to settle it out of pocket. To show he was serious, he said I could take a photo of his driver’s license, which I did. So this guy has no insurance, driving in the carpool lane illegally and could have been trying to take off. I walk back to my beloved Jessie and call 911. Surprisingly, the motorcycle cop shows up in about 15 minutes. The guy who hit me says he was in the fast lane, avoided an accident in his lane, got into the carpool lane, clipped me and pulled back into the supposed lane he was in. The Officer can smell his bullshit and told him not to drive in the carpool lane and then guy shows him the expired insurance information. He then ask if I had any modifications on the car. I should have said no to end it right then and there, but said I have a carb legal aem intake. Of course, the hood gets popped. Seriously, and this has what to do with the accident.
Bad news. This little accident is about ~$1500, not counting anything underneath the bumper since the bumper has to be taken off to assess the damage and additional cost. The db2 will probably be declared a total loss?? I have never dealt with insurance before so this should be a new and hopefully last adventure.
Pics of poor Jessie. I would have taken my wife’s cr-v yesterday, but had a bunch of stuff next to it
Wow the nerve of some people. are you still considering settling outside? Might have been ideal since your beloved db2 will likely carry a salvage title now. Not that salvage title is the end of the world, personally I don’t think it matters if you have a straight car. I guess since the police were involved so is the insurance…
Ohhh dam man… Sorry that shit happened I hate having the kid In my Integra always worries me!
Well personally I would make him pay it he has no insurance and dealing with that is all he say she say they call ya recording every word and listen for specific details that admit fault so be careful what you say and also find a Oem support that might be crunched in but hey honestly at least nothing bad happened injury and what not…
But hey I love my das and would flip if that happened so good luck!!!
pkda9: I thought about it. He seems like a nice guy and I wanted to give him a chance to make it right. He wants to try to pull a loan to pay for the damages. Nothing concrete from his end and it will be cheaper for him to just pay for the $792 fine for not having insurance.
Salvaged title :bawl: Hopefully, I can get more info on the process once the adjuster calls
Mnda90: I should have taken the bigger cars with the kids. Just didn’t think an accident would happen to me. Haven’t had an accident in 21 years. I hope the police report covers my rear end :gay: I am definitely not happy about possibly ruining the clean title, but can’t get mad because if hit me straight on, the kids could have gotten hurt
That sucks Quang! I actually acquired some similar damage to my car and am getting close to finalizing the insurance stuff. Feel free to shoot me an email if you want to discuss the insurance bullshit. Based off of what I’m seeing to your car I think you’ll be OK - not great, but OK. But this does depend on your coverage and those sorts of details.
Thanks again Colin. Will definitely shoot you an email once the adjuster calls with the details. According to the insurance agent, the uninsured coverage covers up to 100k. I wonder if they know that the db2 is the ferrari of the import world and worth ton of $$$$$$? The transmission in the db2 was once yours, but with an LS 5th gear added
That damage looks minimal. It could have been worse! The rear bumper comes off very easy with 4 nuts and a few screws. The worst part is most of the parts you need to replace are no longer available from Acura. You could find a good rear bumper & support at a salvage yard for around $100.00 and the rear filler for around $ 40.00. The expense will be the prep and paint work my guess around $500.00. Check the for sale forum, you might be able to find the parts you need and help out a fellow member.
I hate the feeling of being rear ended. My Excursion got rear ended in the Florida Keys last August. Thank god it was lifted on 37’s. The Silverado that hit me was totaled and I just needed a new bumper, some paint and the exhaust to be straightened. If it was not lifted I would have needed another way to get my travel trailer home!
2ndJenn: Glad you weren’t hurt. That was a nice size truck that hit you. I have an extra rear bumper in the yard. Just need to source the rear bumper support and rear filler. I might just let the body shop deal with it to save me some time. I have seen some DAs on craigslist with the rears I need for $300, if I can’t find them at the salvage yard. My wife would kill me if I hauled one of those home.
The adjuster from Allstate came by today. They will only cut a check for $655 and will not accept any other value from any other estimates unless the car is at an auto body shop being repaired and they will deal with the shop directly. It would have been $855, but there was preexisting damage to the left side of the bumper. The good news is that the car will not be considered a total loss up to about $1500, so if it goes above that, I will eat the cost to keep the title clean.
Time to choose a body shop and might as well respray the entire car. Those estimates range from 3.5-4.5k. The bumper was perfectly faded with the rest of the car. Can’t have a shiny bumper with a pink car :umno:
Thanks for the website. I wasn’t able to find the rear filler panel. Looks like I will have to scrounge around the junkyards in Ontario if I can’t work a deal with the body shop to fix the rear and complete respray
There is a red da at a yard I go to almost weekly. I can’t see the garnish being over $20 from them. If you want to cover whatever they charge me, plus actual shipping, I have no problem grabbing it for you.
No problem, man. Good luck. Protip with dealing with the body shop and a limited insurance check- offer to do prep work yourself (pre paint sanding, removal of trim, etc) and you’ll end up with MUCH more for your money.
Thanks again for the offer to get the parts mydb1. I was able to find the rear filler panel, rear bumper and support in La Brea, about an hour away on craigslist. Too bad the red from a 90 DA is slightly orange compared to milano red  Time to hit up the body shop to see how much lower they can go if I strip out the interior and remove the trims.
