Well I’m pretty much sold on 16" silver or gunmetal slipstreams for my g2 with some decent Kuhmo 712 205/45-16 tires through the groupbuy. The group buy would ring me up about $880 + a nice 20 hour drive (I can visit a friend too). However I just came across another option. Somebody local is selling some 94 GSR rims for $275 with some borderline tires. I can whip a set of 205/50-15 Falken Azenis on them for another $375 installed and balanced ending up making the whole GSR combo being $650 vs the Slipstream’s $880.
I personally think the rotas will look and handle better being a larger diameter and lighter, but the GSRs are way easier to get and are better in their own way (cough…tires & save money). What do you guys think is a better idea? Getting the GSRs with some super sticky Azenis or get some larger, lighter slipstreams?
I am gonna use the combo for both street and my beginnings in autox. Wouldn’t you know it. I just talked to a friend of mine who started talking to me about his hookups in wholesale. Looks like I might add another variable into this mess. I can get some 16" Rated-R’s with paradas for around $750… choices choices…
You can get Falken Azenis for $62 a tire at discount tire direct. Should end up a lot less than $375. Maybe that’ll a bit of incentive towards the GSRs.
GSpeedR: The falkens I had in mind actually had installation & tax included, bought locally too.
My car isn’t too low. I am actually getting lazy about now and feel like getting the rated r’s with some decent rubber (kuhmo, falken, p700z, a520, paradas, can’t decide!!). The ease of just ordering them and driving 15 minutes to get them seems to outweigh (no pun intended!) the 4 pound difference. The slips are 13.5lbs and the rated R’s are 17.5lbs.

Though I have not tried kuhmos (I’ve driven on them but not very hard), I would go for any option involving Azeni. The Azeni are the dominent tire for any SCCA street tire competition with the exeption of maybe those Bridgestone polepositions. At my last autox the 7 of the 10 top indexed times were from cars with Azeni. The disadvantage is no one is sure how long they last. My guess is about 12,000mi or roughly a year. I will never know because I don’t use them as my primary tires. They work perfectly well in the rain too, so don’t worry about that. I also prefer that my tires be 15" or smaller because 16s give me a heavy feel.
Falkens seems like a better tire all around and lasts quite long. I had Falken ze-502s, on my stockies and my rims before, and now im on Paradas, i miss the falkens, gripped a bit better in rain, but the paradas feel a bit more stickier…
this is funny. you are in sort of the some situation i am in. i am selling my 17 inch rota subzeros for some 16 inch rota slipstreams. the 17’s raise my car up too much (or it seems like they do, plus they are harder to spin). i would definately go with the rota slipstreams. they are a great wheel, and i have the kumhos on my subzeros, and they are better than my toyo proxes. they grip just as well when its dry, and even better than my proxes in the rain. it’s a pretty good tire. just my .02.
