(with broken pics)
got the plastic trim around the cluster off, disconnected all the buttons.
pulled the cluster out as far as i could. but it wasnt far enough.
i could BARELY get my hand behind the thing.
but, i was able to feel where the check engine light was.
can someone give me some tips for replacing the CEL and possibly removing the guages so i can replace my speedo cable some other time?
more importantly, is there anyone willing to upload pictures of the back of a guage cluster with AND without the check engine light bulb in so i can see how it goes in. all i can do is feel mine at this point, just feels like a hole under the battery & oil light.
If you’ve removed everything, then you should be able to pull the gauge cluster right out. You’ll have a wire harness going into the cluster, maybe two I don’t remember. There is the plug that goes to the speedo, that’s the speedometer cable, and that’s what is probably holding it back, as it is very short, you’ll have to reach behind and try to unhook/unplug it from the back of the cluster going into the speedometer, then the entire cluster will come out and you can replace the cable then.
I know it is very tight, I ended up pulling too hard and ripped the cable right out of the plug, with the plug still on the back of the cluster hehe, I don’t recommend it as you’ll have a hell of a time putting the plug back on the cable.
double edged sword then…
my hands are too big, i cut them to shit just feeling up to the check engine light socket.
and, for the same reason, i cant get to the speedo cable end that goes into the transmission.
oi.
shoulda seen me try to remove the IACV and the hoses that attatch to it.
had to enlist the help of a g3 owner.
there is a little clip that kind of looks like a c that holds the cable to the transmission. after you get that off the cable will come right out. and yes its a bitch to get the cluster out if you dont do that. ive had to do it before and got cuts up and down my arm it was so tight.
