Hail damaged hood...... anyone used ice cubes on it?????

Hey guys. So Mother Nature if an “F’ing” whore. Yesterday it started to hail during rush-hour, and I was able to dive under a bridge fairly quickly. I guess not quick enough, I got a few dents in my hood (maybe roof too) from large hail. AHHHHHH!!!

Anyway, a guy I know said some old timers used to let the car bake in the sun untill it is good and hot. Then apply an ice cube to the center of the dent which is supposed to cause the metal to shrink. He said it may not be perfect, but it can “pop” the dent out. Anyone heard and/or tried this? This would be like the 6th or 7th time my insurance co would have to repaint part of my car. I am sure they love me.

That technique should work, but it’s not a guarantee every time. You’d want to also put your finger on the underside of the hood if at all possible to aid in the metal of your hood popping back up with the ice…

Hey man, if your insurance will pay for it, why not? It’s not like it was anyone’s fault…you pay for it, you might as well use it.

Dry ice is much more effective. I mean, when it’s +20C in a garage, and people drive out into the -40C winter, it’s not like the dents pop out of their cars  So I’m not sure how 0C ice is going to do much.

Anyway, I recommend you look for paintless dent removal shops in your area. They can do a professional job and the hood will look like new in no time. Best of all, their prices are usually pretty reasonable (like $10/dent for small ones).

now you did read the part about the sun heats up the metal right , expansions and physics are not that hard to under stand

it does work… but its not perfect. if the metal is creased then it doesnt seem to work, but for small dents it will.

Update: Geico initial estimate for PDR (paintless dent repair) ~$1400 minus $250 deductable. Have I mentioned lately that I hate Mother Nature!?

I’ve used the Dent King to get rid of some dents in my car and it worked pretty well. I think they cost about $20…

torch and a freezing cold wash cloth or towel. i seen it on tlc.

I am thinking since the work is guaranteed, I will just go with the PDR. I also asked, “what if it fails”, and they said it would be time for the paint booth then. I guess that is what I pay for full coverage for anyway.
