handbrake light acting wonky

Hello everyone… New 91 Integra GS owner here with a 91 GS that I plan to breathe new life into. ( car is in great shape with only 146k miles on it ) I have had the car about a week now, and as of today started having the handbrake light come on while driving then shut itself back off. it is doing this completely randomly and as of last fluid check the Brake reservoir is full. float is moving around just fine. handbrake off but the light stays on.

brakes have good pressure, no squealing discs.

I did notice while the handbrake is disengaged the light dims a little, and then brightens when you engage it. I am not new to honda cars, but this is my first integra. I have read through all the posts related to this but am not certain any of them actually answer the question.

Being mechanically inclined and good with a wrench I’d like to see if this is something I can fix, before having to pay som lop mechanic my $$$ to tell me what is likely an obvious answer I am just missing.

Thx Zach

Hand brake is cable activated, has nothing to do with under the hood. I had this happening to me for the longest time and one day it just stopped. It’s an electrical issue.

Remove the center console around the brake handle, there is a sensor on the bottom of the lever that activates the light when you pull it up.Make sure it’s making the right contact, maybe clean up the contact.

I wish I could remember what I did that got mine to start acting normal. I’m sure the circuit is interconnected with another one that would shed light on that.

check the brake fluid, the lid has a sensor to read the level.

Thanks! I’ll tear the console out this weekend as I am planning on putting this thing on jack stands and giving it a good once over after I change the oil. oil filter, plugs, etc. etc. and all those other things one should do when buying a used ride.
