Hard to get in gear occasionally!

Basically i’ve been having trouble for the past 9 months getting my car in gear. Here’s a run down of exactly what happens.

EDIT 7/17/2011: I CHANGED THE TRANS FLUID AND ADJUSTED THE CABLE AGAIN AND IT HASNT HELPED.

Initial start up:
Car shifts “OK” but after about 2 miles, the shifting gets notchy, stiff, and third grinds after 2500 RPM

After driving sometime it loosens up a bit, but grinds third only after 3000 RPM.

If i shut the car off for maybe 20 to 30 minutes and then drive it again the shifting feels great for the first 10 miles or so then it goes back to square one.

Recently when I come to a stop sign, or slow down to like 5 mph, if the clutch is disengaged (pedal down) with the car in gear it feels like it wants to grab the gear and go. (this happens in any gear)

car periodically grinds in 2nd gear, always in 3rd gear, periodically in 4th gear.

NOW BEFORE YOU FLAME ME AND TELL ME TO SEARCH… I HAVE: Possible causes of the problem are, clutch disc, bad pressure plate, or a cable. (but I replaced the cable a few months ago and it is not binded)

Anyone have this problem? what the hell should i do.

Ummm how about your transmission is getting bad…your synchros are worn out…(dogteeth) .orr your lacking tranny fluid

ohh how i hate the sound of that…

Yea man its probably about that time sorry to say

^^our factory transmissions don’t use “dog teeth” they’re helical.
when your trans heats up, so does the fluid. this thins it out. you can try another fluid. but first, try adjusting the cable

definitely drain, flush and refill with Honda MTF and check cable tension.

As others have said… I’m going with either trans fluid, or a bad (improperly adjusted) clutch disc.

Ive heard from multiple shops that once a trans. reaches a certian mileage, not to replace the fluid. Is this true or just a myth?

they’re talking about automatic transmissions. and they’re talking about a flush. not a drain and fill

I was coming to a stop today and the car jerked twice before it actually caught the gear and tried to take off ALL WHILE I WAS HOLDING THE CLUTCH IN. Im getting my trans fluid tomorrow and its going on wednesday along with adjusting the cable. lets hope this works

The cable could be stretched as well… just a thought.

You could have a broken piece on your clutch disc that is getting caught and draggin making it hard to get in gear and also causing it to move while clutch is disengaged. (Very common on integra clutches)

I just replaced a disc due to this problem on a 95 integra and the guy drove it that way for so long that it ruined his 3rd gear synchros. He could barely get it into any gear before replacing the clutch disc. I’ve had it happen on my 93 LS and 94 GSR.

well I adjusted the clutch and swapped out the fluid, and the shifting is still notchy, still grinds, but it did stop the whole “trying to grab the gear while the clutch is disengaged” thing.
im gonna look into replacing the clutch disc and pressure plate now. thanks for all the help

ye it sounds like the disc may be starting to separate

actually after driving it around for a few hours everything is back to how it was. Notchy Shifting, and when its rolling to a stop with the clutch disengaged in gear, still feels like it wants to grab the gear.
