Hardwiring a Cigarette lighter plug

Hey,
I had this idea today, but I wanna check with you guys before I try, and I dont know how to search it.
I was thinking about hardwiring the cigarette lighter plug for my satellite directly into a 12v system behind the dash. Maybe the stereo, or tapping into the lighter behind the dash.
Does anyone know what the two wires are in the standard cigarette plug. Is it a 12v positive and a ground? If so, i want to wire it to my 12v acc. stero wiring and ground it. Has anyone tried this?

Just wire it to your free pin in your inner fuse box.

Do it the same way that we explained in here. http://g2ic.com/forums/showthread.php?t=161326

Take your pick which one you wanna use.

im confused tho, if i chop off the cigarette lighter part. how do i know which wire is positive and which is negative.- im gonna be hardwiring a ps2 to my car.

-Neg = anywhere on your car’s body, frame, metal.

You just need to pick a power source.

Just cut the pos.(+) lead, it is the center one on the lighter, extend it long enough to reach the under dash fuse box, the do as StokelesS_g2 mentioned and plug it into the constant power free pin on the under dash fuse box, don’t forget to install an in-line fuse on the new line. 94

hmmmm how do you go about installing an inline fuse anytips?

Oh - O. :rimshot:

How can you wire a ps2 to the car’s cig lighter wire? Doesn’t the ps2 run on AC current and our cars are DC current? Well unless you get those little voltage converters that plug into your cig lighter port…

True, but also that new little slim PS2 uses an adapter style plug so it may be possibble to hard wire it up.

I was gonna try it myself, but my slim PS2 blew out, it only plays blue disc games, and CD’s now.
(black and silver games no longer worked)

yea i ended up getting my hands on a slim one for 30bucks so i wanted to stick it in my glovebox.
and they sell this, i thought this might work

Hey that adapter is pretty slick… but too bad it’s only for the ps2 slim. Any way to hardwire a regular ps2 into the car without the use of a converter?

if i were to use that adapter all i should do is cut off the cigarette lighter part??? this shouldnt be a problem?

well you would want to take it apart, that one isn’t very good since there is electronics in the plug. The better kind to use have a little AC box and then the ciggy plug on the end that you can cut off. Or you could get a power inverter and chop off the ciggy plug on that. I used that setup in one of my friends car and it worked great. That is a better solution too since you aren’t wiring the PS2 directly to the power source.

yea but to do it like that id prolly have 2 run a wire down the car to my trunk like my amp wire and put a power inverter back there then what do i use extension cords??? i dunno… im about to purchase one of those 1to3 plug cigarette lighter adapters and mount that behind my dash and run the radar and ps2 off that, and then fill in the front where the lighter would normally be with a cigarette lighter plug like from the newer civics ect. that are just like a plastic flap.

in the install it went straight to the battery. We cut off the ciggy plug and used heavy gauge wire through the firewall. I actually wanted to just add a second ciggy lighter in my car, since most cars these days have 2-3 plugs instead of 1. Trying to find a nice kit that I could do the install with…
