Has anyone recovered the hatch / cargo cover?

The carpet on my hatch cover is peeling away and the hinged part is broken so that it doesn’t really fold properly anymore. I’m sure this can be salvaged. Has anyone ever removed the carpet and laid some vinyl on it?

I don’t have pics but an old friend of mine had his done. he said it really kinda made the car hot in the summer and in retrospect he’d rather have done it in a carpet like or tshirt like material. it looked great. i’ll see if he has pictures.

Thanks. I think the color would be more of an indication towards heat retention in the car rather than the material though.

I’ve seen the carbon fiber ones, but those are too reflective/shiny and too expensive anyway.

Well vinal is going to retain heat more than carpet regardless of the color even white will hold heat but doesn’t seem like it would be a big deal to recover one

I’m guessing just a lot of spray adhesive and maybe a hair dryer to get the contours right…

have you thought about the 3m di-noc carbon film? you could strip the fabric off the stock piece, and wrap it in di noc. that’d be tight as hell. it just requires a hairdryer to get the contours correct.

I just looked that up. It looks very promising but I don’t want the carbon fiber look. They have a lot more styles though. Thanks for the tip!

First things first, I’d need to fix the “hinged” part of the cover. It broke off completely :frowning:

don’t you think it’d be easier to just get a new one? lol i’m gonna be in florida in may maybe i’ll bring you one lol

LOL Thanks but old is old. I decided to just repair it.

So has anyone ever tried to repair it using a continuous hinge? I bought a 30-inch metal hinge from Lowe’s for $7 and screwed it into the two hatch pieces. This thing works fantastic and is a lot sturdier than before. The only thing I couldn’t get around was the fact that due to how it sits when installed between the speaker areas, there is a little bump between the fore and aft pieces. Nevertheless, it works great and I plan on getting the entire thing recovered in vinyl so that the hinge isn’t visible.

I’ll get some pictures up soon.

You will need smaller 1/4 inch screws if you intend on doing this.

bout to repair mine also, im going to be laying down some fabric instead though.

with that hinge will it completely fold back on its self? like when i fold mine it lays pretty much flat on top of its self, i was going to suggest a new hinge like that but figured it wouldn’t be able to lay all the way down.
